StephSilver: Martin Malatin immigrated to US in 1903
I am looking for leads on my greatgrandfather, Martin Malatin, who was born in Austra-Slovakia-Hungary in 1878 and immigrated to the US in 1903, settling in Pennsylvania. I do not know where in Hungary he was born, and have not been able to find any additional immigration details. He died between 1918 and 1920, without naturalizing as a US citizen, so I'm at a dead end for where to look to find his birthplace.

Thanks,
Steph Silver

A map of Austria-Hungary:

The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910
You need that place of birth for your ancestor in order to proceed with the research. Did you locate his manifest? Did he come thru Ellis Island? Did you look in 1910 census? How about the church he attended, got married in and had his children baptized, if any? The Slovak Republic's phone site is listing MALATIN. www.zoznamst.sk
Might this Marton MALATIN coming thru EI in 1905 be your ancestor? He was traveling with Jacob Malatin and both were from Veghely which is Hranovnica. A listing for Malatinova (female) in Hranovnica's phone book if that could be used as any kind of indication.

STephSilver: Re: Martin Malatin immigrated to US in 1903
Thanks for the hints! I do have the 1910 census entry for my Martin (who definitely immigrated in 1903, and was married at the time - unlike the 1905 Marton), but have not found an Ellis Island entry for him. The 1910 census just lists Slovakia as place of birth, so no help there. I'm starting to think he and his wife (Anna, immigrated in 1904 with baby Mary) must have come through another port - maybe Philadelphia - because I've searched so many variations at Ellis Island. I have their years of immigration from their granddaughter, including details of how Anna had to wait because her shots didn't take, and how she then waited for Mary to be born and finally immigrated a year to the day before her second child was born (in the US). Unfortunately, Martin died without naturalizing in the US, so no help there. I'm trying to find out now if Anna ever naturalized (she had not by the 1930 census), since they probably came from the same hometown, having been married before immigration.

Thanks,

Steph Silver

Your welcome.
The 1930 census would say if she was naturalized, applied for or was alien. If she lived pass 1940 and not naturalized then she would have an Alien Registration Form.
What is the maiden name of Martin's wife? Since they married in the "old country" the villages would be within 10 miles radius.

Anna Malatin's maiden name was Hlavcak. As of the 1930 census, she was still listed as an Alien, and she did live past 1940 so I will have to look for her Alien Registration Form. Meanwhile, another kind researcher has found her Ellis Island entry for me (under Malacin), and that states:
Last Place of Residence: Szepeoveghely, Hungary
Date of Arrival: April 04, 1906
Age at Arrival: 22y Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Kronprinz Wilhelm
Port of Departure: Bremen

I've started to review some church records from Szepesveghey at my local Family History Center, but nothing further yet.

Many thanks for the help!
Steph

Surname HLAVC'AK and MALATIN does list in Hranovnica's phone book.
www.zoznamst.sk
The spelling of Szepeoveghely should be Szepesveghely / Hranovnica, Slovak Republic.
You know about One Step to locate an Ellis Island manifest? www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html

Ntefertill -a-t- aol -d-o-t- com: Re: Martin Malatin immigrated to US in 1903
The 1910 census for Scranton, PA lists a Helen Malatin, Also there are naturalization papers for a Joseph Malatin who came to Scranton and who had a wife Anna and children "Ellen" and Stephen. My father was born in Veghely, Hungary and came to the US in 1906. His father, Joseph Braxator, also emigrated and was married to Cathryn Malatin (also spelled Mallin in one document),who stayed in Europe. I am looking for links to the Braxator family, both in the US and Europe.
