| kezdi: Re: Matoltsy | Hello Tiffany,
Matoltsy is the archaic version of the Hung. historical noble Matolcsy surname. The change happened in the late 1800s, "cs" is a separate Hung. letter equal with the archaic "ts", which sounds like the Eng. "ch", like in coach.
For the above reasons, the Hung. online phone directory: http://www.tudakozo.t-com.hu/main_en?xml=main&xsl=main
only lists 4 Matoltsy, but 36 Matolcsy, and 222 Matolcsi. The name ending "y" and "i" possesive suffixes have identical meaning, and interchangable, inside families too.
The meaning is, that at one time way back in history, the bearer of the name, some way was connected to the village of Matolcs, Szatmár County in eastern Hungary, as either owned it, or were from there.
To find out which family yours belonged to, you have to start researching the family history, starting with the place of births by family or available public records.

listing the noble Matolcsy family, details available in various membership schedules.
