See Hungary's phone site at www.matav.hu/english/index.html (in English!). There are 4 results with the surname Matyi in Nyírkarász. Look to it that Nyírkarász are in correct Hungarian spelling or use the town search function.
Good luck to you!

bluedunedin: heritage questions
i am looking for information on my father's family and his mother. her name was anna fedor, she came to the usa in 1920 via Szirénfalva, which as i understand now is part of Slovakia and is now called Ptruksa. her report from ellis island in new york city stated she came from surenval or surenfal. my father's name was matyi and he was born in 1921. i understand the city in slovakia is located beneath what is now called Matyi hill. this is so interesting to me and would like to know more about my family's history. if someone knows more information i would be so grateful. i can be reached at margefekete -a-t- columbus.rr -d-o-t- com

thank you,

Zlatica: Re: Matyi in Ptruksa
Marge

From www.obce.info (only in Slovak) village Ptruksa has 532 inhabitants, mayor is Alexander Takacs
Surname MATYI still list in Ptruksa's phone book.
www.zoznamst.sk Most likely some distant relatives.
The LDS-Mormons have filmed the church records but nothing shows up under Ptruksa. Probably included with a neighboring village for which I did not look.
On this old map http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/200e/40-48.jpg the village is as Ptruksa.
On the Ung megye as Szirenfalva http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910
I would say Surenval and Surenfal one and the same Szirenfalva /Szirenfalu = Ptruksa.

Zlatica
Hello. It has been about one year since I have written here but am now planning a trip to Europe and will spend some time in the village where I believe my grandmother has come from, Ptruksa. I have made contact with a priest from a neighboring village and was wondering if perhaps you could find any information on my grandmother there. The priest is from Trebišov. The priest wrote that the village, Pstruksa(his spelling) is a small village near the town Velke Kapusany. It is under the parish Ruskov. Roman, Catholic.
Last year you had said that you searched the LDS-Mormon film records for Ptruksa but nothing showed up. Could you either send me a link for that search tool or perhaps check if the spelling should be PSTRUKSA? Or maybe looking under the village name of Velke Kapusany?

Here is my information:
Anna Fedor pregnant in 1920 and did not marry but gave her son, my father, the last name of Matyi. I wish to find out more about my grandmother's family and hopefully find information on the man who fathered my father. Thank You,
Marge Matyi-Fekete

Zlatica : Re: Matyi in Ptruksa
Sorry Marge, I just now found your message. Was not notified about it.
The village is Ptruksa almost on the Ukrainian border, South-East of Velke Kapusany. There is a village Ruska about 4.5 km from Ptruksa.
Being that your ancestor was pregnant in 1920, this would fall under different set of rules. This information is still private. You would have to prove direct descendancy to get information on the birth of a child.
MATYI does list in Ptruksa's (UTO 056) phone book.
www.zoznamst.sk
The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) site is listing Roman Catholic church records of Ruska.

I find: MATYI Andras, Andrasne, Ferenc, Zoltan and Ildiko in Nyirkarasz's phone book. 5 KISSs also in the phone book.
You need to put correct spelling of the town, diacritical marking. You might try sending a letter to all of them.

Jay Farrell: Re: MATYI Family
Hello Susanna,
I did receive your posting about the Matyi family and I hoope that we are related! Unfortunately, all the information I have about my grandmother is her parents names, George Matyi and Elizabeth Kiss and that she was born in Nyirkarasz on Dec. 18, 1892 or maybe 1890. I have tried to look for her birth certificate here through the Mormon church but all the records are written in Hungarian or Latin and I have trouble reading them. I have not looked for a few years and should try again new. There is one other person who says her father is Matyi from Nyirkarasz on the Radix forum. Do you know anyone in Hungary I could write to who might be able to help me with my search? I would very much like to meet relatives over there. Thank you. Jay Farrell

The church records should not be giving you any problems. I would say as long as the priest's handwriting is legible you should be able to pick out the names.

Radix: Re: Matyi- Malcza
Hello Nick and Zlatica,

In addition to Zlatica's tips, I have compiled the 1877 gazetteer of Hungary into pages, like the one listing Zemplén (Zemplin) County:
http://www.radixhub.com/radixhub/gazetteers/1877/zemplen.htm
So, at least in 1877, Greek Catholic people of Málcza/Malcice were registered in Márk/Markovce. Clicking on the FHL link you can get to the LDS film.

One more resource, the Catholic Directory of Hungary from 1842:
Place index starts here:
http://kt.lib.pte.hu/cgi-bin/kt.cgi?konyvtar/kt06010901/0_0_2_co_1329.html
Málcza (Málczó) would be on col. 252, 634 - this latter is for the Greek Catholic church:
and yes, listed as an affiliated church under Márk (mater), there is Málcza (Malcsiczi):
http://kt.lib.pte.hu/cgi-bin/kt.cgi?konyvtar/kt06010901/0_0_2_co_633.html

Hope this helps.

I am Stacey Zavala, and my great-grandfather was Joseph Matyi. When they became naturalized citizens, the Matyi name was changed to Mott. We do have a Michael Mott, a Helen Mott, and a Yolanda Mott; however, they all use the Mott name instead of Matyi.

Chizy: mezőcsáti Matyi?
Üdv!

Matyi János valamikor az 1900-as évek legelején született, ha minden igaz, Mezőcsáton. Valaki be tudja azonosítani a mezőcsáti ágat a saját családfájába? Az is lehet, hogy "csak" Csátra költözött, de vajon honnan? Bármilyen apró információt is nagyon megköszönök!

My great-grandfathers name is Matyi János. He was born in about 1900-1910 (?) and He live in Mezőcsát, but it doesn't necessarily follow that He was born in this town. Somebody see something cousinship? (Sorry I don't speak in English, I only learn this language.)
