Tracy

You need to locate a name of a town for your ancestor in order to proceed with the research.
There were 40 MEDLENs that passed thru Ellis Island to America so you might want to take a look there.
There was a Johann that arrived in 1900 from Egbell which is now Gbely, Slovak Republic and another Johann arriving in 1912 and he was born in Csari which is Cary, Slovak Republic.
http://mapy.atlas.sk for locating a town in SK
www.zoznamst.sk SK's phone site and the name Medlen lists in town of Gbely.

In 1899 passing thru Ellis Island a Jakob MEDLEN from Egbell, which is Gbely, Slovak Republic. He was going to Binghampton, NY.

http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Nyitra megye as that is where you find Egbell.

Andrew: Re: John(Johann)Medlen
Medlen family that arrived to Slovakia is actually of a Scottish decent. They arrived to Upper Hungary and Transylvania in 16 hundreds as soldiers during Turkish wars. Many of these soldiers stayed is Central Europe and marry to local population. This was the case with the Slovakian MEDLEN family line.
My information may guide you to actually find your ancestral place in Scotland. Spelling variations include: Maitland, Matland, Maltland, Maltalent, Matlain and others.
First found in Berwickshire where they were granted lands by Malcolm Canmore, King of Scotland, and their (Medlen) Chief was known as Lieutenant of the Bass (Rock) in the year 1080.
English line of this Scottish family usesfollowing spelling variant of the name: Medlin. They are mostly from Cornwall.
You may contact me directly: redc.at.redc.sk

Hurbanek: geneology
I am looking for geneology information for Jan Hurbanek or his wife Rosalia that emigrated to the United States in 1900 and 1901 with their son Ludvig. We are searching for more family information from that time in Gbley--other family members, the size of the town at that time, economic situation, etc.

pw0909: Re: John(Johann)Medlen
Do you have any male Medlens interested in Y DNA testing? Would be interesting to see whether your Hungarian Medlens have any connection to other Medlins and related names including Maitlen, Modlin, Madelin, Maidlin, etc.
