There were 40 MEDLENs that passed thru Ellis Island to America so you might want to take a look there. 	Andrew: Re: John(Johann)Medlen Medlen family that arrived to Slovakia is actually of a Scottish decent. They arrived to Upper Hungary and Transylvania in 16 hundreds as soldiers during Turkish wars. Many of these soldiers stayed is Central Europe and marry to local population. This was the case with the Slovakian MEDLEN family line. My information may guide you to actually find your ancestral place in Scotland. Spelling variations include: Maitland, Matland, Maltland, Maltalent, Matlain and others. First found in Berwickshire where they were granted lands by Malcolm Canmore, King of Scotland, and their (Medlen) Chief was known as Lieutenant of the Bass (Rock) in the year 1080. English line of this Scottish family usesfollowing spelling variant of the name: Medlin. They are mostly from Cornwall.
