Ken Dowd: Melkovics
I am trying to get information on where my grandpatents came from.

I think my grandmothers name was Maria Melkovics and she came from Lublo in Austro-Hungary. I think she came to America in 1899 at age 17. I think the village of Lublo still exists as Lublo in Slovakia today. I have info. from Ellis Island that a Maria Melkovics came on the ship Lahn on June 08, 1899. I don't know much else.

My grandfathers name in America was Joseph Walsak. I don't know for sure what his surname was in AUstro-Hungary. I think he came to America the same time as my grandmother did. As a matter of fact my sister thinks they may have been married on the ship.

I would sure like to find out more information. I will be making another trip to Hungary and would like to go to Slovakia to see where my grandparents came from.

regards,

Ken Dowd

The town of Lublo, Szepes megye, Hungary is now Stara Lubovna, Spis region, Slovak Republic.

No W in Slovak alphabet so I do think that the surname would be VLASAK. Most of the time our ancestors married within same region, religion, with few exceptions but for sure same language.
