| kezdi: Re: Mihalyi | Mihály=Michael in Hungarian, Mihályi means from or belong to a place called Mihály, usually short for Szent=Saint Mihály with an additional geographical name, because there is/was so many of them, about 50. I show the first few on the list, as you can see, there is actually a Mihályi in there, the others have the extra names. These type of surnames started in the 15-16th century, before that there was no surnames for the general population. So from the placenames alone you can't figure out the origine of the name, unless the nobles who got their titles with land or village and has the actual placename in their title.
