	William Moncsko: Moncsko Looking for information on history and origin of Moncsko/Montsko family. Montsko name was changed to Moncsko by Bartholomaus Montsko during the 1840s for unknown reasons. The Moncsko/Montsko families migrated to Gnezda (Hneizdne) Slovakia from unknown German lands and were considered to be German. Church records from the Catholic church in Hneizdne document Montskos back to the 1600s. Other possible variations of this surname amy include Motzko, Montzko, Monchko, or Mojtzko. A name MONCZKO,MONTSKO shows up in Poland. www.herby.com.pl/herby The MONCZKOs that passed thru EI have on the manifest that they are from Markowice/ Markowce, Poland. www.pilot.pl for locating a town in Poland There is a town Markowice and Markowce in Poland. Karoly Montsko has that he is German. Is it the spelling of Montsko that is German as Karoly is not a German first name. Rudolph Moncsko too has that he is German. Again, might be because the name Rudolph has German roots? You might want to consider posting on Silesia's or Germany's board. Is Franz Sedlacek German just because his first name is spelled in German as Sedlacek seems to have Czech roots. Is Johann Taborszky German only because his first name is in German? 	Arek: Re: Moncsko Hello William The surname Moncsko is of a Polish origin. It sounds originally [montch-ka]=Maczka. You can find confirmation of this in "Dictionary of countries and lands of former Polish Kingdom". This book is writen unfortunately in Polish. There is mentioned Stefan Maczka (Montsko) who was a governor in about 1851 of Polish Spisz (Sepes/Zips) a region which belonged from 1414 to 1772 to Polish Kingdom. You wrote that Moncskos probably would be Germans because they came from unkown German land. One of Polish regions which belonged, in 1600s to Austria and later to Germany, was Silesia. In this region there were some people bearing the surname Maczka. So I think that they could came from Silesia. They were probably Polish speakers but were noted as Germans because they came from the land which belonged to Austria-country of German language. It seems to confirm my thoughts about regions of origin. I do know for a fact that the Moncskos from whom I am descended spoke German, not Polish. There are Montskos in Germany, who are related through Bartholomaus Montsko. They were expelled from Czechoslovkia under the Benes Decrees following WW2, because they were "German."
