Vivian Kahn: MOSKOVITS/Lastomir
I was in Michalovce in August and found the grave of Leopold (Aryeh ben Menachem haLevi) MOSKOVITS, a previously unknown relative, who is buried next to my great-grandparents, Markusz (Marek, Mordche haLevi) MOSKOVITS and Sali KOHN. Leopold was reportedly born in Lastomir in 1861 and moved to Nagymihaly (now Michalovce) and had two wives (Mali GRUENSTEIN and Fani KESSLER) and 15 children, at least 3 of whom were Holocaust victims. I know of a Dovid MOSKOVITS from Lastomir who married Hani NEUMAN and was living in Szobrancz before 1895. Not sure if there's a connection. Please contact me if you have any info on MOSKOVITS families from Lastomir.

Vivian
According to the 1897 director of landowners and leaseholders, my great-grandfather Moskovics Markus leased 530 Hungarian acres (kataszteri hold) of farmland in Bunkocz from Maria Dráveczky and Janos Mariassy. The farm had 312 acres of arable land and 135 acres of grazing land for his 70 head of cattle. My presentday map of this area shows farmlands extending east from Bunkocz (now Bunkovce) to Ostrov, where my grandmother was born in 1876. I'd appreciate any information about Bunkocz or farming in this part of Ung megye. My other paternal great-grandfather had a farm between Kristy and Tasula southeast of Bunkovce.

Vivian Where did you gain access to the 1897 directory of landowners? My family is from Porostov but I found out that my great grandmother was probably from Bunkovce. I ordered the church records from the family history center. The area is still basically farming - wheat which is combined in late June or early July. Most people have huge gardens of potatoes, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, flowers, etc. They support themselves. Most also will have a pig or two - chickens, rabbits, etc.

The 1897 Directory and a variety of other original documents have been scanned and can be searched and downloaded from the Klimotheca website at http://kt.lib.pte.hu/cgi-bin/kt.cgi?konyvtar/kt04022301/index.html" Be advised that this resource and others are in Hungarian.
