Robert

Where are you? MRAC'EK in Slovak and Czech, MRACSEK in Magyar and MRACHEK (maybe) in English.

What you want to know about your surname? You need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed with the research. What language did your ancestor speak?

s.m.: mracsek
As far as I know the name "mracsek" has czech origin. It is the diminutive of the czech word "mracs" which means cloud in englisch and "Wolke" in german. So "mracsek" in czech means "Small Cloud" or "Wölkchen". However as far as I now the name is quite common in czechia, but it is al ways written with a `´ over "cs" which means that its spoken "tsch". This I learned from a palametaric tour guide, when I visited Prague at the beginning of 1990s.
Mayby in hungary this has been dropped, because my graet-grandfather came from hungary to germany at the beginning of the 1920th with the name "mracsek" without the `´ on his name.
In germany the name is quite rare and I think its only borne by our familiymembers. Its combination of consonants makes it very hard to speak for common germans. I myself prefer that its spoken "mrassek", but I sometimes come across people who know a bit about czech language and they speak it "mratschek" - this is the way you would speak it correctly in czech.

Hallo Mr. Robert Mracsek!

I guess you are the famous concert master of the slovenian national orchester of maribor. Nice to meet a far relative on the net. I´m a grandson of the late alfred mracsek, who was brother of the late otto mracsek from berhausen/germany which who might know, because he visited relatives down in south-east europe for sevral times - as he told me, when I was a teenager (25 years ago). On behalf of having some additional free time know I am building up a family tree, routing down to some famous ancestors of the 19th century, which held higher ranks in the royal hungarian army, especially in the heavy horse cavallery ("Ulanen"). You are welcome to exchange any info over this board or on my buiseness e-mail account, which you can find on any searchmachine under "Direktor des Amtsgerichts Perleberg Stephan Mracsek"
