| Vivian Kahn: NEUMAN/Szobrancz and Miskolc | My paternal grandfather, Viktor (Avigdor Avram ben Meier) NEUMANN was born in Szobrancz, Hungary, in 1868. His parents were Markus (Miksa, Max) NEUMAN, who was also born in Szobrancz, and Ottilie (Adel) POLACSEK. The 1892 Hungarian business directory lists a Maximilian NEUMAN who was operating a mill in Also Ribnyicze, a village about 6 km north of Sobrance in 1891. He probably died a few years later, before the birth of Miksa, Viktor's oldest son, in 1899.
Viktor was the middle child. He had at least two brothers, Ludvik born in 1864 and Markus born in 1883, and two sisters: Roza (Teres) born 1866 and Josefina born in 1871. Ludvik probably died before 1901, the year that Viktor's second son Ludvik (Lajos, Louis) was born. I have also found mention of Hani NEUMAN, born in Szobrancz about 1865, who married David MOSKOVITS from Lasztomer and Eidel NEUMAN b. about 1869 who was married to Fulop STEIF from Garanas (Garany, Ung). I have not found birth or marriage records for either Hani or Eidel and do not know whether they were also sisters of my grandfather Viktor.
Attached is a picture of my grandfather Viktor taken in Miskolc in 1915. He
died in Michalovce, Slov. on Dec. 31, 1920, just before my father Elemer emigrated to the US. I am looking for information about the fate of Viktor's siblings and their families. To my knowledge, none of them came to the US. Based on the Yad Vashem website, I know that several children of Eidel NEUMAN and Fulop STEIF perished in the Holocaust but I have been unable to find any information about my grandfather's other siblings or their children.
Please contact me if you have information about NEUMAN families in Szobrancz or Miskolc.
