rschieber: need proof of name
I have a problem. My ancestor Frank Bakazan arrived in the U.S. in 1911 I believe possibly in October while his wife Elizabeth Keller arrived in April of 1911. The problem is that Frank Bakazan was not his name before coming here. I have found a Frank Pakaczow (Pakaczan?) that arrived in Halifax, Canada on October 15, 1911. Elizabeth sailed with her brother Peter and his family in April 1911 directly to the States. I need to find someway to find out what Frank Bakazan's name was. They married in I believe Nakofalva (Nakova) and lived there together after they married. His home town was Marienfeld (Nagyteremia). I would think that their marriage in the church records could tell me his name but I am not there to look. I have documents saying that he came here via Halifax, via Detroit. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou. Bob

Thankyou.

I believe this came from the ships manifest. I have seen the manifests and her brother made several trips back and forth and the problem lies with those that transcribed these as the name is different on them. I assume that the manifests were difficult for Americans to read. I am looking for something a bit more tangible. I do appreciate your help. Thankyou

Bob,
Unfortunately or fortunately, it depends on view points I strongly disagree with it, The Dreyer Databases changes names coming from historical documents like Ellis Island as they believe the correct German spelling.
Anyway, based on "Drayer" I searched E.I. for E... Paka... and came up with this two, arriving in New York on the same day May 6,1911 on the same ship Amerika:

Pakanzan, Elizabeth Nakofalva, Hungary 24 1887 1911
Pakanzar, Elisabetha Nakofalva, Hungary 24 1887 1911

Studying further the Original Shipping Manifests, I come to the conclusion, that they're the same person.
The name of the first one along with the Keller family were crossed out, didn't made the supposed sailing from Hamburg on Apr.26,1911.
The second one indeed made the voyage without the Keller family with her, sailing on Apr.27,1911 from Cuxhaven, where the ship Amerika must have made a stop.

Although there are many spelling mistakes on E.I. documents, these two appears to be correctly transcribed except the name endings, may or may not be Pakazan the correct spelling, two more name possibilities for Frank.

Thankyou and you were correct, it is Pakanzan. I just found the actual manifests and it listed her and her husbands name. The only odd thing is that she did sail with her brother and his family, the Kellers. It was under my nose all of this time. Thankyou for your help. Any suggestions on how to trace it in Nakova and Marienfeld?

You're welcome,
The Keller family indeed also sailed out from Cuxhaven, just not on the same manifest page with Elisabeth.

On this website: http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/ESE/banat_n.htm#nakodorf
look for Nakodorf's Bibliography link, than under 35.Nakodorf=Sellesch you can order the following:

Horn, Nikolaus. Familienbuch Nakodorf und Lunga im Banat 1790-1945. [E: Family book ...]. 2004, HOG Nakodorf. Out of print, available on CD 35 €, order from Nikolaus Horn, Haumwöhrer Str. 151, 85051 Ingolstadt

Also, it seems older records are available from LDS/FHLC:

Village name in FHL records: Nakodorf, Nakofálva
Church records available at FHL: Christenings 1790-1843, Marriages 1790-1868, Deaths 1790-1845
FHL Microfilm Nr. 1190319, 1190396

Village name in FHL records: Gross Termin, Marienfeld, Mariafolde, Nagyteremia
Church records available at FHL: Christenings 1770-1845, Marriages 1770-1865, Deaths 1770-1840

Although the name is clear on the manifest it is evident now that the name was written down wrong by the clerk or whoever wrote it on the manifest. Any help or suggestions in finding the real name would be greatly appreciated
