ETIENNE SOMOGYI: PAUNCZ
I am looking for my grandfather PAUNCZ SAMUEL lived in MOZSGO and for his ancestors. If possible to find out genealogy, dates of birth and death, from where they came and when they settled in Mozsgo first and later my mother PAUNCZ ILONA went to Szigetvár.

The LDS-Mormons have filmed the church records of Mozsgo, Hungary. You can order the films and gather ancestral information.

I thank you very much for your kind advice however I have some doubts whether it would apply to my case: actually my grandfather was a Jew, like myself, so I wonder whether the mormon church has registered Jews.

I look forward to your kind comments about how should I proceed.

Sincerely,

Etienne (István) Somogyi

The LDS's site is not listing Jewish records from Mozsgo but that does not mean anything negative. It is possible that the Jewish records are with another town. You might have to go to Family History Center Library, if possible, and inquire about the Jewish records. Do post on Jewish board if you have not. The more places you post, more help.

Peter Forintos (- Pauncz): Re: PAUNCZ
Hi Etienne, István and János,

WIth János we are keeping contacts, our "second-great-grandfather" was Mor (Moritz) Pauncz born in 1830.
The story I heard from my grandpa Miklos Pauncz was, when
he was to marry during numerus clausus in 1940, he had to prove his (great?)grandfather was born in Hungary.
I am not sure it is to apply to Moritz or his father Izhak, but it was not true, since he was born in Éger ( today Cheb in Czech Republic). At that time their name was Paunz.
The name has been changed to match the Hungarian standard reading later, and part of the family kept the original Paunz until today. If you follow the map from Pecs to Matra (their are the most Pauncz in the 19th century), up northwest to Cheb ( about 750 km), not too far from there to the South ( about 250km) you will find Paunzhausen. As you know many Jewish names come from the place we come from.

Etienne (István) Somogyi: Re: PAUNCZ
Hi Peter,

Tks for your message although I do not understand exactly your explanation. Paunzhausen, according to Wikipedia is: a
location within Freising district. Paunzhausen in FS.svg ... Paunzhausen is a municipality in the district of Freising in Bavaria in Germany. ...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paunzhausen
I look forward to your explanations. I am still trying to find out about my ancestors in Mozsgo

forintos.peter: Pauncz
Hi Istvan,

My answer was referring to your question about the origin of the name Pauncz:

Our "second-great-grandfather" was Mor (Moritz) Pauncz born in 1830. His father was Izsak (Izhak).

One of them changed the name Paunz to Pauncz. So, before that the family name had been Paunz. (They made the change in order to match the Hungarian standard reading of names.
Part of the family keeps the original name "Paunz" until today. That might be interesting since those who write Pauncz are closer relatives than who write "Paunz")

Most probably the Pauncz ancestors migrated from Paunzhasusen (Friesing, the place you found) to Cheb (Czech Republic) and further on to the Matra hills in Hungary.

From there, I suppose, part of the family moved on to Pecs and other directions.

I hope it is more clear now.

pistaesteban: Re: Pauncz
Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for your explanation. Most probably the origin of the name came from ancestors in PAUNZHAUSEN who like many other Jews moved to the East during one of the many persecution.
As far as I know nobody of our Pauncz family members, except for my uncle Alfred, survivied the Holocaust.
If I can be of any help - I am living in Costa Rica (quite far from Mozsgo, Pécs and Budapest.) please dont hesitate to contact me. Regards,
Somogyi István

port: Re: Pauncz
hello peter I'm a Pauncz member myself , i live in Israel and my surname is now Porat shmuel (originally Pauncz shmuel)
my father is Prof Ruben paucnz and we lived in Szeged Hungary till 1956 ,
I know that i'm nammed after my grandfather and I understand we had some ansestors form Matra as well.
I am incontact with Peter Pauncz in florance and with eva forintos in budapest who are my fathers second cousins
The Paunzhousen village near munich can actually be where our ansestors lived two centuries ago ,
it would be interesting to explore that.

I am surprised how many more Pauncz are scateerd around the world , In Israel we are the only ones

Hello Shmulik,

Yes, Eva is my mother, we are 3rd cousins, and I know yr father :)
I have been to Paunzhausen a few years ago, and tried to discover the route the Paunz might have migrated through.
In North Czech where I heard they had been staying, in Cheb, there is only one piece of stone remaining of the cemetery, and nothing from the synagogue. In the synagogue at Karlovy Vary I have been told there might be more information in the Praha center...
