Jeanne: ancestry
I am tracing my ancestry. My mother's maiden name was Perdi. Her mother's maiden name was Sipos. They immigrated from Budapest in 1922. Mom's name was Margit Perdi, her mom was Ilona Sipos. I am having trouble with this because I do not speak Hungarian. If anyone recognizes those names, please e-mail me.

Janos: Perdi families in Transylvania
Dear Jeanne,
The Perdi surname is frecvent here in Transylvania (now Romania), in Kovaszna area. I have some short tree fragments of them.
By the way, Levente Perdi, who made the first posting on this board at this moment live in the States. I was colleg with his father, here in a local electric motors company.

Jeanne: Re: ancestry
Thank you. I was able to get the Ellis Island information, but I did not notice Kiskunmajsa. I had no Idea where my grandfather was born. My mother did tell me that the original last name was Toth-Perdi and that his family was originally from Alsace-Lorraine (I don't know if I am spelling it correctly) in France.

Jeanne: Re: Perdi families in Transylvania
Janos, my mother did mention Transylvania quite often. She thought there might be some connection with Vlad the Impaler, but I have been unable to find any connection. Maybe she just liked Dracula movies. I do have a photo album with pictures of her relatives. I asked her to label them because without her, I would have no idea who these people were. The bad part is she used mostly first names. I have an Uncle Joe Sipos in a WWI Cavalry uniform and a wedding photo dated 09/12/1914 -Toth-Perdi, Istevan and Sipos, Ilona. I also have their marriage certificate, which I will try and scan. I also have a picture of a couple "Kati married Gyuri Ribar". I think Kati is a sister of Ilona Siops. Again, I am hampered by not being able to speak the language.

Janos: Perdi families in Transylvania
Jeanne,
The other surnames you mentioned (Sipos and Toth) are also very frecvent in the mentioned area (Kovaszna, Transylvania).
Joe could be Janos or Jozsef Sipos (for Ellisisland search) and Istevan is Istvan (Steve), Ilona is Helen.
The Ribar surname is strange for Transylvania...
I am able to translate documents from Hungarian or Romanian into English. You always have my addresses in "profile" near my messages. Please send the copies to my mailbox.
Lucky hunting!
Janos

Jeanne,
Hope you were able to get the additional information from the Ellis Island Original Scanned Manifest.
Here's some more info. from the Scanned Manifest of what looks like Ilona Perdi third trip to the US in Nov.3 1922. Her b.place listed as Magyar Czerna (aka Magyarcsernye), Yugoslavia - before 1920 Hungary, today Nova Crnja, Serbia. Destination in the US: brother John Sipos, Weirton, W.V.
Closest relative in Hungary: cousin Joe Elek (in Hung. Elek Joe=Jozsef) Budapest, Vacrisitza 22 I(Floor) 8(Number) Hungary. Vacrisitza is a misspelled street name, -sitza=utcza=Street, Vacri could be many thing, one guess could be Vaci utca, one of the most famous walking-shopping street in Budapest.
