psaffa: Bela, my grandfather
Ships manifest from 1913 lists my grandfather's name as Bela Saffa, from Bezo, Ungvar county. Sailed from Bremen, Germany. Arrived Ellis Island with wife Paula Hille, aunt Olga, and son Bela. I believe the surname spelling was changed, so am having difficulty tracing information. Is there someone I can contact in the renamed Slovakia town who can help? The actual spelling of our name was recorded as Schaffer. His occupation in Hungary was a Miller as we were told. I do not speak or write Hungarian. My grandmother spoke only english to us, however she spoke 4 languages including english. My grandfather died in 1950.

Thanks to anyone out there.

Zlatica : Re: Bela, my grandfather
Hi

Bezo, Ung megye, Hungary
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 is Bezovce, Slovak Republic. www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
www.obce.info village with 985 inhabitants.
An ALL site for research in SK:
www.iabsi.com/gen/public
The manifests were written at the port of departure. Of course there were some spelling errors and than piled on by a transcribing errors done by an EI volunteer being that he/she did not know that Europeans write few letters differently from Americans. Is his manifest under what surname?

Zlatica : Re: SAFFA
p

SAFFA and SAFAR in area code/UTO 056 which would include Bezovce but none in Bezovce's phone book.

I find Olga, Bela, Paula, and Bela SAFFA arriving thru EI in 1914 from Ordama. Paula, Olga and Bela were naturalized citizens. I am sure you noted the set of numbers by their names. They left a Janos(ne) Mrs. Janos SAFFA in Ordama, Hungary. No Ordama in "old" Hungary and there were 19 people from Ordama thru EI www.stevemorse.org Need to look on the manifests for a clue as to the (mis)spelling.
Ordarma, Ung megye, Hungary now Tarnivtsi (Storozhnytsi), Ukraine. 146 people from Ordarma thru Ellis Island. You are aware that it is possible that it was YOUR ancestor who changed the spelling of his surname when he was naturalized citizen.
