Andrea: SAJAT Surname
I am researching my ggf John SHIOCK b. 6/2/1873 in Austria-Hungary. We believe the correct spelling of our last name is SAJAT. He immigrated to the US in 1901 to PA to work in the coal mines. He was married to Anna Mikula. She immigrated with her first born son (Steve) in 1902 to be with her husband. If you have any information about them or the village they may have come from, please contact me.

Have you located his manifest? If at least you could find a place of birth than we can proceed with trying to figure out the "old country" spelling of the surname.

That is some "fancy" (mis)spelling of your ancestor's surname which I am still trying to pronounced to come up with a correct name. Why a surname ending in T (Sajat) when the "americanized" version ends with a K? All the SAJATs and SAJATOVICs that came thru Ellis Island seems to be from former Yugoslavia.
SAJATOVIC and MIKULAS does show up in Croatia's phone book.
As you know S^AJAT lists in Slovak Republic but in very small numbers. www.zoznamst.sk

Andrea: Re: SAJAT Surname
Well, that's why I am researching our background. I don't know how the spelling got changed so dratically. However, on the naturalization list I have from the Indiana Co. PA courthouse, it is spelled two different ways, SOJAT and SAJAT. I have sent to the INS for the actual paperwork, but haven't received it yet. I believe that SAJAT may be the correct one because it is listed in the signature column. We were always told we were Yugoslavian. It is very confusing, isn't it?

I am trying to help. You know, Yugoslavia no longer. Lets hope the INS paperwork will have a place of birth so you can proceed.

Andrea: SAJAT Surname
I received my ggf death certificate. I lists him as being from Yugoslavia, no town listed though. His name is spelled SHIOCK on it, so not much help.

I don't want to believe it but at least you know that your research is in former Yugoslavia. The death certificate information is as good as the person giving / knowing the information. I am still puzzled by the spelling Shiock (Sijok or Sajok or ?).
