David: Schuschvary
Dear all,
we have the name Schuschwary in our family.
It was said that the name come from hungarian.
It should mean sos var in hungarian.
Is there a town in Hungary which is called like this ?
It was said that the name come from nobleman of our ancestors.
But up to now the ancestors with the name Schuschwary we found in Dresden and before that up to 1740 near Straßbourg in France.

Does anybody know if the name was changed under Napoleon because the ancestors came to Dresden 1815. 1813 Napoleon lost his war near Dresden / Bautzen ?

Thank for a help.

Best regards
David

David,
Sasvár (Sas=Eagle Vár=Fort) was the main Hungarian/Székely fort in the 12th century along the northwestern, Morva border. An other nearby fortification was Morvaőr (őr=guard), which today with Sasvár are in the Slovak republic and called Sastin-Straze/Sasvár-Morvaőr.
The "i" and "y" name endings are common Hungarian name creating possesive suffixes, meaning the person is from/or belong to that place.
Sasvári(y) are fairly common names in Hungary, and also an old noble family name. Hopefuly somebody will have more information about it for you.

For present day location search for Sastin: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/main.adp?country=SK

On these early 1900s County maps of Hungary, chose Nyitra from the list, and look for Sasvár in the yellow colored Szeniczi-j(árás)=district. http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/vmlista.htm

You're welcome David,
Although there were lots of placenames with Sós=Salty in Hungary, Sósvár(i) wasn't one of them, and no such a name exist as far as I can tell.
On the other hand, you may run into an other Sasvar, correctly spelled Sásvár(Sás=Sedge, in Hungarian "á" is a separate letter and sounds differently than "a"), today called Tiszasásvár and falls into Ukraine (Tisza is a river in eastern Hungary). Anyway, Sásváry(i) is not a common name at all, compare to Sasvári(y) which is.

sasvary: Re: Schuschvary
Dear David, the meaning of the name Schuschvary /sasvary in original/ is eagle castle. So it is related probably to a family owning its own caste. In case of further interrest please don´t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, ferdinand sasvary
