Zlatica : Re: spodnjak
It is of Slavic roots, for sure. One listing for SPODNJAK in Croatia's phone book and nothing shows up in Slovenia's or Serbia's phone book.

www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm (mapquest) good locator of a town.

There is a Wilhelm Spodnjak arriving at Ellis Island in 1912 from Mitrovica, Croatia. There is also Paul Spodujak too from Mitrovica. So then is the name Spodujak or Spodnjak as I have seen EI manifest where the u is actually an n in the name.

Zlatica : Re: spodnjak
Sorry, forgot to look under alternate spelling of the name. There are few people named SPODNYAK and they too are coming from Mitrovica.
There were also 2 SZPODNIAKs that passed thru Ellis Island but they are from Slovak Republic. The name SPODNIAK does list in Slovak Republic's phone book.

Robert Goetz: Re: spodnjak
Hi -

The Paul Spodnjak mentioned is my grandfather and Wilhelm Spodnjak was his brother. Another brother, Heinrich, and their mother Susanna and three sisters, Magdalena (Lenka), Anna and Theresa emigrated as well. The eldest brother, Johann, remained in Mitrovica. His family lives in various parts of Europe now, one branch in Sweden, another in France, one in Germany and another in Croatia. I have traced this family back through my great-grandfather, Johann Spodnjak to his father Georg Spodnjak who seems to have emigrated to Mitrovica (in Srem, now part of Serbia) from Slovakia in the early 1800s. Spodnjak is a Germanized spelling of the Slovak Spodniak and was Anglicized on arriving in the US to Spodnyak (Wilhelm changed it to Spodyak). I know there were several Slovak settlements in Vojvodina. Bacsky Petrovec was one, I'm not sure if Ruski Krstur, Kucuru or Djurdjevo were among them. If any of this sounds familiar, e-mail me and I can send more information.

Hi Phil -

Let me know what you'd like to know. Also there is an excellent genealogy group, Banat-L

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/HUN/BANAT.html

It focuses on the Banat (now split between Serbia and Romania) and the neighboring provinces of Batschka (Bacs-Bodrog) and Syrmia/Srem/Szerem. They have FAQs etc. that have quite a bit of info.
