Benjamin: Looking for a Louis Stern
I'm looking for information on my great-grandfather, Louis Stern, who was born in Hungary in 1871 or 1873. I have no other information other than he immigrated to the U.S. in 1890.

Ideally, I would like to know what town he lived and if he had any brothers or sisters. Please email me if you have any information.

Zlatica: Re: Looking for a Louis Stern
You need to locate his passing to America and hopefully there will be a place of birth. You need that name of a town in order to proceed with the research.

The surname STERN can be found in Hungary, Poland and Slovak Republic.

I have attempted to find the town's name, but I have not succeeded. His name is on the ship's log, but he wrote 'Hungary' instead of the town's name. Curiously, he wrote 'cigar maker' under profession.

The manifest was written by a person working at the port of departure and not by your ancestor.

The early manifest did not require a name of a town only country's name.

Hungary's phone site is listing the surname STERN.

Mike Kaczer: Re: Looking for a Louis Stern
My grandfather's family name was Stern. He was born in 1887. He changed it to Kaczer (Illčs). Could he be a cousin of your great-grandfather? I don't know when your message was posted, nor, at the moment, do I know of any possible connection between us, but the coincidence is very interesting. I would like to know if I have any relatives whom I don't know about. Sorry, I don't speak Hungarian, but other realtives do, if it is necessary to do so.

I don't know where Bekescsaba is. But my 4th Great Grandfather, Yusrael David Stern, had six children, including my 3rd Great Grandfather Herschel Stern and Hersh's brother Adolph Stern. Hersh was born in 1860, reportedly in Czeckloslovakia. His children were born in Harczvolva (now Szolyva-Harsfalva) and Munkacs (now Mukachevo, Ukraine). So there might be a connection. Let me know!

rlerner: Stern family
Thank you for responding to my inquiry

Do you know Yusreal's other sons names?

What year (approximately) was Joseph born/died

The Sterns I have identified go back around the early 1800's (possibly as late as 1830) - there are at leasst 39 Stern's in my family tree

In my family, the Sterns I have identified go back to a Herman Stern (wife unknown), they had 2 children, one named Abraham

Abraham's and his wife (last name Iken) had 10 children (born between 1850s to 1890s)

Do your Sterns fall within this time frame

Please advise

Thanks

amyamybobamy: Seeking Stern Connection
I'm seeking historical Stern and Weisz relations from town of Ujhely. The place names were given as: Kisz, Ujhely, Niz Nighella (Nizny Gela?), Voslusla, Kis.

Brothers Herman/Armin Weisz and Joseph Weisz, born around 1850, had businesses in Prievidza. Herman's business was dry goods for consumers, Joseph's was construction materials. Herman married Helene Stern (whose brother was Julius/Eugene), and she was probably from UJHELY. Julius later married Gisella/Czilli Biel, and they moved to the Unites States, but they had no children.

I believe that the father of JULIUS and HELEN may have been RUDOLPH

Julius and Gisella moved early to the United States, and all who moved to the United States lived in New York City.

Herman had several children, most of whom emigrated to the United States around 1910: Gustave (b. 1881); Ferdinand (b. 1891); Pishtah; Geza; Olga; Sandor; Eva; Vojtech/Bela (b. 1887); and Yozha.

Gustave married Minna and remained in the United States; Sandor married Jeanette and also remained in the United States. Vojtech/Bela had married Rene in Czechoslovakia and arrived with his children Edith and Kornel, and they also remained in the United States. Ferdinand RETURNED to Prievidza, and he perished in the Shoah along with his wife Helene (b. 1891 in Trnava) and children Olga (b. 1919 Budapest) and Johann (b. 1921 Kremnica), who were transported from Prievidza and murdered in Auschwitz in April, 1942.

If any of these family names look familiar to you, I would be interested in sharing information!

esther: Re: Stern family
Hi,

I was wondering if you could tell me more info. on your Stern lineage. My Grandmother's (born around 1920) father was David Stern & she had a cousin Hershu Stern. I'm not sure after whom he was named, but might be after someone from the Stern side of the family. My grandmother's mother's name was Henya/Yenta, not sure. Hershu's father was Moshe Leib Stern who perished in the holocaust with his son Naftoli Hertz, daughters Yentel Stern & Henya Freiman & wife Esther. Another daughter Chaya Sura Freiman is alive.

The Stern family came from Munkacs.

I'm new to this research stuff but some of my relatives might know more. Thank you very much
