Betty: Szabo Family
Searching for info on my grandfathers family. Peter Szabo was born in Vajan (Vojany) Ung County. Peter and his brother Janos immigrated to the US in 1899, 1904 and again in 1914. Their destination was Whitsett, PA. Peter married Anna Mislai in 1907 in Homestead, PA near Pittsburgh, PA.

Peter and Janos may have had a sister Susan.

I take it that it is a town named Zemplin (Slovak spelling ) Zemplen (Hungarian) in Zemplen megye, Hungary.

The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Zemplen to locate a town named Zemplen.

The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) website is listing as having filmed Reformed church and Greek Catholic church records of Zemplen / Zemplin. You can order the films and gather ancestral information.
www.bmi.net/jjaso to familiarize yourself with church wording.

Somehow the surname Michaelo does not seem to be in proper Magyar or Slovak spelling.

The village of Zemplin's phone book is listing SZABO.

I am beginning a search for a number of Szabo women that would have been born in the Nagykapos area around 1880-95. Mary, Anna, Julia, Bertha & perhaps Elizabeth Szabo, children of John Szabo and Anna Simko.

All the children but Elizabeth emigrated to the US around 1900-05 to Fairport Harbor, Ohio (near Cleveland)

Also, possibly a sister of Anna Simko, Barbara Simko, and perhaps a brother or two emigrated to the same area.

Thanks again. Now all I have to do is figure out where to start?

I suppose the best thing to do is to start with my grandmother, Bertha Sabo (probably Szabo in the old country).

Born: (maybe) 12/04/1892
Nagykapos, Ung Varmegye, Hungary

Mother: Anna Simko
Father: John Sabo (Szabo)

Emigrated to the US prior to 1910, settled in Fairport Harbor, Lake County, Ohio.

Married John Bagin (maybe Jano Bagin) in 1911. He was from nearby Ung Var, Ung Varmegye, Hungary (now Uzhhorod, Ukraine), emigrated to US in 1906.

Al Segedy: Szabo
I am trying to find the birth place of my maternal grandfather Joseph Szabo. I presume he was born Szabó József. I believe he was born in Ung county in 1891 and that his parents were Roman Catholic. My goal is to obtain his birth certificate for genealogical purposes. Unfortunately, I do not speak Hungarian. I just know a little Hungarian.

Dear igwalter,

My maternal grandfather was named Joseph Szabo, presumably born József Szabó. I believe he was born in 1891 in Ung megye. I have no idea what town he was born in or whether it was in present-day Slovakia or Ukraine. At this point I have a dearth of information about him. He emigrated to Watertown, Connecticutt, probably in the first decade of the 20th Century, and then moved to Akron, Ohio.

I know that the Hungarian name József Szabó is like "John Smith" in Hungary, but I was wondering if that name may have come up in your Ung megye research and whether you have found any ancestors that might be related to him.

Thank you.

He was married to Anna Szabo, whom I believe he married in Watertown, Connecticutt in about 1915. He died in Akron, Ohio in 1956. He had children Anna, Joseph, Michael, George, Helen and Frank. You have looked in the church for your SZABOs marriage certificate. If your ancestor had social security numbers than his SS-5Form would have a name of a town. If he was naturalized citizen than that form would have a name of a town. If he was not naturalized and lived pass 1940 than he should have filed out an Alien Registration Form which would have a name of a town. Can you follow the female line, meaning the lady he married. What was her maiden name? My apology if you have looked in all those places and coming up half full.

MBV: Szabó
Keresem Szabó László 2 lányát, sajnos neveiket nem tudom.

Szabó László született 1946 körül, meghalt 2003 szeptemberében. Édesanyja neve: Mihalik Aranka Erzsébet (1921-1965?), aki apám nővére volt. De nem ő nevelte fel Szabó Lászlót.

Kérem ha valamelyik lánya erre tévedne véletlenül, írjon!

P. A.: Szabó
Tisztelt Mindenki!

Üdvözlök mindenkit a fórumon.

A tanácsokat előre is köszönöm.

Emiatt a család a Tyutyuka előtagot viselte a Szabó név előtt, legalább is a köznyelvben. Valamikor a 80-as években meghalt.

Dave: Re: Szabo Surname
I am the great grandson of Helen Olga "Szabo/Sabol" Barilla and have also been looking for her family. I have her record of death from Michigan and she said that her father's name was Steve Sabol. It wasn't until yesterday when one of my cousin's informed me that on her wedding certificate she had her last name down as Szabo. I also have a John Sabol petition for naturalization. He was married to a woman named Mary don't have her maden name. They also lived in Crystal Falls Michigan and had four children by 1915 John 7/23/1907, Mary 12/29/08, Joe 05/20/10 and Celia 02/22/15. John also said he was from kosowitz Austria. We think he was trying to spell Koskovce,AKA as Koskowce and Koskocz village just horth of Humenne in Zemplin province. Helen said she got here in1894/96 John came in 12/10/1904

SABO, SABOVA (female) does list in Koskovce's phone book.
www.zoznamst.sk
Surname SABOL and SZABO can be found in area code 057 (Humenne).
Did you locate their manifests? Helen would have come thru as Ilona and Steve as an Istvan. A first name translation website: http://topolcsanyi.alphalink.com.au/names
3 people came thru Ellis Island from Kosowitz, Russia. Most likely a transcribing error as so little number of people from a village.
Istvan SZABO from Koskocs and Koskorcz thru EI. www.ellisislandrecords.org
Have you posted on Ancestry or Genforum? I am sure there must be a SZABO board.
You have this site for research in SK?
www.iabsi.com/gen/public Did you check LDS-Mormons site for the church records?

Boehmke: Re: Szabo Surname
I am the son of Julia Barilla Boehmke. Her father was Joseph Barilla and her mother was Helen Olga Szabo (later spelled Sabol). There are other Sabol relatives living here in the Upper Penninsula of Mich. My Aunt, Susie Barilla visited Hazleton and Wilkes Barre in the late 1930s or 1940 and visited with brothers and/or sisters of both Joseph Barilla and his wife, Helen Szabo(Sabol). She gave me photos of some of the relatives including Rahalls. I believe grandma's father's name may have been Steven Szabo (Sabol). My mother said they were from Zemplina, Austria-Hungary. I have the original marriage cert from my grandparents in Kingston, PA from 1896.

tomSabo: Interested in finding Szabos from Hatvan, Paszto, Matraszolo area
My grandmother, Rozalia Zsillyak was born January 1911 in or around Paszto, which lies to the west of Matra. In 1937 or earlier, she met a young man I believe was named Szabo Gyula who died in WWII at the Don river. As far as I can make out, they were never married. My father was born in July 1938 and was adopted a few years later after my grandmother married and moved to Kispest. I believe the soldier would have originally lived in the same area where my grandmother grew up. I would be interested in corresponding with someone who has knowledge of Szabo or Zsillyak family members from that area.

I have recently obtained a Declaration of Intention for an individual who may possibly be my maternal grandfather, named Joseph Segedy, presumably previously known as Szabó József or possibly Josef Szabo. I believe my grandfather to have come from Ung megye. This particular Declaration, dated 1924, states the place of birth as being what looks like "Negy Bery" or "Megy Bery" in "Czechoslovakia" Is there such a place? Could this possibly be Megye Bereg? I wouldn't think it's Megye Bereg, because neither in English or Hungarian the County/Megye procides the name.
Can you post the Declaration here?

What was the ships name? I could check the handwriting on the manifest.

Josef SZABO arriving Dec.29,1905 thru Ellis Island is 16 years old, Magyar, last residence Naarlsari (sp?).
Using One Step/gray form to locate EI manifest www.stevemorse.org there were some from Nagy Bori (sp?). Similar to what you have. Your Negy Bery / Megy Bery could be Nagy Bereg, Bereg megye, Hungary (now) Ukraine.

Al, i use the free Ellis island website to see when my relatives immigrated and on which ship; you can view who was their contact in the US, back home, and who they travelled with. You may have to try several names, its tricky. I also use the Social Security Death Index, SSDI, search for a free one, they are useful if a relative had a SS#. Also, Cleveland has a searchable Necropolis for older newspaper Obit's, you may find a lot of info there. Google "cleveland necropolis". Cleveland has a very large Hungarian population, a lot of my Szabo family are there

dmanville51: Re: Looking for the Szabo family
Kathy, start at the free Ellis island website and find out when he came over. You will have to join the site, but its free. You might have to try different spellings and advanced searches, but you will learn who his contacts in the US and back home were, his description, who he travelled with. Next, search Google for a free SSDI, social security death index and bookmark. Check the Mormon website; I dont have much luck with that, but try. Go to the maps(see postings) to become familiar with Old Hungary and locate where your family is from. Since 1920 when Hungary was divided after WWI, many of the counties (megye) and towns have become parts of other countries. Everyone on the site is so willing to help, and so informed its amazing. Good Luck. Donna in Texas. My grandfather was in the army too. he didnt care for it.

I looked the original shipping manifest of the Dec.29 1905 arrival of Josef Szabo. The last residence shown Naarbai is obviously a misspell, no such a placename.
Checking further of his destination, friend Janos Varga in Proctor, Vt. arrival record, I came to the conclusion, that both of these gentlamen came from:
Nagybári/ aka Bári, Zemplen county, today Bara/ aka Veľká Bara, Slovakia

Joseph,
My uncle thought my grandfather did come from Ung megye. I found the Joseph Szabo in this Declaration of Intention on the Ellis Island website. He arrived on 12/29/05 on the Graf Waldersee, his last place of residence being "Naarbai" according to the Passenger Record. On the Declaration it looks like "Negy Bery," which considering the usual transcription errors could very well be Nagy Bereg. His name on the Passenger Record and Manifest is "Josef Szabo," Manifest Line Number 21. Thank you very much!

Joseph,
I am almost sure my grandfather came from the Felvidék (Slovakia/Ukraine) region. He spoke Slovak as well as Hungarian. My grandmother was from that area, also spoke Slovak, and was possibly Ruthenian. Although my Szegedi side came from Bács-Bodrog megye, my Szabó side did not. If the Joseph Szabo in this Declaration of Intention came from either Bács-Bodrog megye or Szerem megye, he is unlikely my grandfather. To be him, there would have to be a place named something like Morovica in the Felvidék.
The Joseph Szabo in this Declaration arrived on November 6, 1908, on the Carpathia. I could not locate him on the Ellis Island website. Thank you again.
