ertekes: Szekér family
Among my ancestors the first Szekér's name was Ferenc (1696-1769, Ráckeve). His wife was Erzsébet Fölep. His son István (perhaps from the previous marriage) also lived there (1727-1770).Péter, born in 1757, married Erzsébet Kertész from Apostag. Their daughter was Erzsébet Szekér, my father's great-grandmother. I think they died in Ráckeve.
I wonder if anybody knows about Szekérs from Ráckeve.

Eunice: SZEKER
My great-grandfather SZEKER/SZELKER Martin/Maarten was (likely) born in Ajkarendek, in the year 1874. His cousin SZEKER Tama/Thomas was born in Ajkarendek in 1976. they both immigrated to Brazil around year 1898, possibly travelling to America first.Martin had a sister called Mary Frank living in New Jersey in 1931. She had five children. Please let me know if are a descendent of this family or have any informatio. Thank you. Eunice

EuniceSzekir: Re: Szekér family
How interesting, there is a Szeker Erzsebet in our family tree but at a later date, in Ajkarendek. Born in 1879, we believe that she was my great-granfather's cousin. I wonder whether our families are related... Have we got a family tree built? I am building ours and if you would like we could see whether there is a connection. I live in London, England now. I am doing this research for my old relatives (aged 90, 86 and 84 years0old) because they always wanted to find out about our hungarian roots. The place we are sure about is Ajkarendek because it is in an old document. Note in my previous message that Szeker Tamas was born in 1876, not 1976, ok?

Dear Nice,
Please don't take it personaly, I'm not sure if you aware of it, Szekér (means cart, farm-wagon) is a fairly common surname, probably there's one in every other town. To build a family tree, you need to reseach Vital records, Church records before 1895, Civil records after, don't expect easy answers.

To the document, it's an Employment (Servant-) Book, a numbered, 48 page record of past and future employments, given out by the undersigned Devecser District Court to Szekér Tamás (Hungarian name order, last name goes first)

(Sz)ületett=Born A.Rendek = Ajkarendek village
Devecser district
Veszprém county
Magyar ország=country=Hungary

?..tékes=Illetékes=Taxable at A.Rendek

Yes, I have now found out about the Family History Centre here in London - I shall go very soon to look for church records of Ajkarendek.
Hopefully then I will have more important documents to go on.

In the meantime, hope we will keep in touch through this site.

Hello John.
I have been researching births in Ajkarendek.
Yes, in my findings I came across the birth register of a girl called ERZSEBET.
She was born in 20/01/1879.
Her parents were PAD Janos and VEBER Erzsebet.
But she is not part of the SZEKER family.
There are another two girls named Erzsebet with the SZEKER surname but they have different dates of birth.
I hope it helps you.

John Scot
Please note that my studies of SZEKER family tree are on-going. I haven't got all the information I need yet but am working on it. I have studied family documents and seen some of the microfilms at my local FHC. But here is along way to go yet...

We have found a reference to SZEKER Erzsebet but I haven't seen her birth entry or church record yet, so I can't confirm this information further.

Her name is listed on a document of "bermalandonak" or confirmandi, as is my great-grandfather's name. His name was SZEKER Marton and he was 15 years-old at the time. SZEKER Erzsebet was 11 years-old. Her parents were SZEKER JAnos and HENN Terezia. Based on their ages, she must have been born between the years 1878 and 1879.

Have you any other information about her? Would you like to see a copy of this?

Nice Szekir: Re: Szekér family
Very good news!

I do have a part of our family tree with very similar information. But in my notes, I found the entry of birth of SZEKER Terezia as 18 December 1881 - might help you.

I have also a register of SZEKER Katalin, born 23 November 1884, daughter of SZEKER Janos and HENN Terez.

I am posting a copy of the confirmati for you. sorry I didn't get any photos with your last post.
By the way, can you read in Hungarian? I don't but have learn a few words during my research.
We have some old photos of some long lost relatives, but we don't know who they are... Would you mind to have a look in case you recognise anybody?

Also a register of the wedding of Janos and Terez, which took place 11 Feb 1873.

I have a few questions for you, hope you don't mind me asking.
Do you know who were the parents of SZEKER Janos?
Do you know when the surname SZEKER changed to SZEKERES, and why they changed?

Have you ever heard anything of MARY FRANK, she was my great-auntie living in NJ in 1931. That's her married name, I believe she was baptized SZEKER MARIANNA or MARIA. We are desperate to find any information about the departures from Hungary. I know that my great-granfather left Hungary between 1897 and 1900. Eventually, he settled in Brazil but he might have passed through America. His name was SZEKER MARTON.

Anyway I hope we can keep in touch, and help each other.

Hello,

Thank you for the info. We know very little of the stenger family prior to Janos Stenger. You mentioned Johanna Stenger how was she related to Janos. I know we were told they came from the Ertzgom Region before moving to Ajkarendek.

Any help you can be would be greatly appreciated.

John,
The Mihaly/Michel Szeker and Maria Marz you mention were my sister-in-laws grandparents. Do you have anymore information about them?
Finding this site is the first time I have found anyone that might be related.
Thank you,

JStengerStevens: Re: Szekér family
My grandparents and great grandparents were born in Ajkarendek, and my great Grandmother was Theresa Szeker, very highly likely the sister to Erzebet. The LDS church scanned Ajkarendek church records that went through the 1890 Confirmation record, and you can see listed their parents and ages. I have some information uploaded in LDS church records that show the people I know. I haven't been able to take them farther back than the 1850's because I have difficulty reading the birth and death records. The 1875 Confirmation Record is very clear and provides good information. I am guessing we are related, and I am interested in finding more on our family tree from Ajkarendek. Theresa Szeker married John Stenger who had some ties to Estergom, Hungary, and that is the side I'm really trying to chase, but I would love to have more information on the Szeker side. Great Grandmother Theresa Szeker died when my grandfather was 9, and he always spoke fondly of her. If you want to exchange more information, e-mail me.

Nice,
You are my cousin! My great Grandmother Theresa Szeker married my great Grandfather John Stenger. They had the two surviving boys (see John's genealogy above). My grandfather was Joseph Stenger, the eldest son. His brother John was 2 years younger. Their parents died when Joseph was 9 and John was 7. They lived with their grandfather Szeker until Joseph was 16, when Uncle Mike Szeker helped him immigrate to the US.
You obviously have more information on Erzsebet and Katalin (Kathi) than we do. I would love to exchange info. E-mail me at stevenjs -a-t- email.uah.edu -d-o-t-

Sorry it took so long- life got in the way of genealogy for a few years. I sent the link of this Board to my Aunt. She thinks she knows Lisa. E-mail me at stevenjs -a-t- email.uah -d-o-t- edu if anyone wants more information from or about me, but from what I gather, you (John) probably have everything I do. I am glad to get potentially more insight into the Stenger side. Now, does anyone know where in Bavaria the townspeople came from in the first place?

Nice: Re: SZEKER
Dear John

It is good to hear from you!
You know, all this time I have been looking for Mary Szeker, assuming that she left Ajkarendek as a single woman! But of course she might have got married before going to America.

I had that letter from Mary Frank translated (it was German mixed with Hungarian) from which I obtained the following information:

She was my great-grandfather's sister (she calls him "my dearest brother Martin".
She was living at 10 Franklin Avenue, Maplewood, New Jersey in the year 1931.
She had five children, in 1931:
- the eldest was a girl, already married, was 23 years-old
- a boy called Anton who was 16 years-old
- a boy called Michael, 15
- a boy called Paul, 13
- one more child, who was 7
She could have had more children...
Please let me know if this record especifies the town from which this couple comes frm, or any other information.
Thank You

johnscot: Re: SZEKER
Eunice,

Got them the Husband was Antony Frank born about 1887 in Hungary, Emmigrated in 1910. Mary Szeker emmigrated in 1913 Oldest daughter is Mary born in 1909 so they were more then likely married prior to Antony going to America as you thought. Son Antony was born in New Jersey around December of 1914. Michael was born about November of 1916.

This is from the 1920 Census and shows them living at 472 South 10th Street in Newark, NJ.

Hope that helps.

JenniferStengerStevens: Re: Ajkarendek
Joseph from California,
I will be in SLC in May. You seem to know how to use the Family History Library Center effectively. Do you have any suggestions? I have already asked for the Ajkarendek church records and Kislod civil records to be available from the vault. Do you have any recommendations on finding information on the Stenger line which is not as clearly originated from Ajkarendek? We were told the Stenger line came from Estergom before it tied into Ajkarendek, and that originally they were from the headwaters of the Danube in the Black Forest.

Also, I was told years ago that the Germans kept records of what towns picked up and moved to Hungary the way the residents of Ajkarendek did, and there is a way to find out where they came from. Do you have any suggestions of where I might search?

Nice Szekir: Re: Szeker Fam
Hi Jason.

Yes, I do have notes on the names you mention! When I started my research, I made sure to note down all references/links to the family SZEKER.
Amazingly, all seems to be making sense now...

These are the facts I am sure about, from the church records:

SZEKER Ivan no date) married to GRIBEZ: Terez(no date)
(Ivan could de yours Isan)
They had three children (at least):
Josephus, 20th February 1814
Mariana, 1ts December 1817
Michael, 28th March 1824

SZEKER Josephus(1814) married VALENTINIS Katalin (no date)
(they also called Josephum and Josef, Catarina Valentiz)
They had five children (at least)
Teresia, 24th October 1842
Jozsef, 4th January 1844
Erzsebet, 30th September 1846
Catharina, 19th February 1855
Josephums, 13th December 1858

SZEKER Janos(1850) married HENN Terezia
They had four children (at least)
Istvan, 14th November 1876 (died in 4 weeks of tetanus)
Therezia, 18th December 1881
Katalin, 23rd November 1884 (emigrated to America)
Mihaly, 3rd February 1891 (America)

These are the facts that I am assuming to be true, although I have no evidence yet:

SZEKER Janos(1850) is the son of SZEKER Joseph(1814)

SZEKER Ivan(1793) is brother of SZEKER Paulus/Pauli (1780)

Hope this is helpful. Might have a few more details in my notes, like addresses and cause of death. I will look for my records if it is of any interest to you.

Regards
Eunice
