emmornan: Re: surnames
My birth name was Tolmazin. My father and grandfather were born in Mogilev-Podolsk, on the Ukrainian side of the Dniester. In his diary my father, may he lie in peace, wrote that his last name most probably originated in a little town or village by the name of Talmazin. He did not indicate where this place was. He did have relatives in Kishinev. So, I assume that Talmazin may have been in Moldova. Prior to the Internet age, I did not know anybody with this name, other than one uncle in Israel. My father left Russia in 1922 to Palestine with his brother. I know he left behind two brothers and two sisters. I assume that Talmazan and Tolmazin are of the same origin. Surfing the Internet I found that there are many Talmazans around mostly in Romania. If you know more on the subject please let me know.

Slavic: Re: surnames
I was born in Talmaz (sometimes called Talmaza) in Moldova.
It is a village of about 10,000 population, about one hour from Odessa, Ucraine. The name is Turkish in origin, and means literally-A hundred houses.
The village had a rich jewish community, and many Jews with the name of Talmazan come from there.

Alurie: Re: surnames
Hey, I am currently researching my family tree and my grandmother is a Talmazan. I never thought they were other Talmazans who were also born in Besserabia - Rumania. My great grandfathers name is Avraham Talmazan and his fathers name is Isaac Talmazan. My family comes from the Ukarine (Belgorodnistrovsky,Odessa...) and I was told that Avraham Talmazan had a lot of brothers. Maybe we are related somehow?

lenochkat: Re: surnames
Hi! I am also Talmazan. I live in NYC but originally from Leningrad (St. Petersburg). I know little about Talmazan history but what I do know is that my great grandfather, Naum Naumovich Talmazan, came from Talmazi (Besorabbia) via Odessa to St Petersburg. He had several brothers, who lived in Odessa. One of his brothers immigrated to Spain before the revolution so there are some Talmazans in Barcelona related to him. Part of my family moved to Israel in the 90's and part of is scattered all over US and in Canada. Possibly your great grandfather was related to mine.

alurie: Re: surnames
That is so interesting! I found out that Avraham Talmazan had two brothers that left in the 30es to Argentina and one brother went to Spain. I am actually in touch with one of the grandchildren there. It might be possible that we are 3rd cousins?! There is one person alive in NYC who gave me a lot of information about the Talmazan family. He is my grandmothers first cousin and the last survivor who was able to remember.

Do you know what was the name of their grandfather? My great great grandfather's name was Naum. My grandfather mentioned that he was a wine taster in Talmaz. Do you know the names of the brothers, who went to Argentina and to Spain?

alurie: Re: surnames
One of the brothers names who went to Argentina was Leib Talmazan (there is a whole intersting story about him) and his brother who went to Spain is Pontshik Talmazan. Thats not his real name but its whats people called him. Another brothers name is Avigdor and my great grandfathers name is Avraham. Their parents name is Issac and Ita Talmazan. There were also some sisters and more brothers. I am not sure if all the information is 100% correct. What dou you know about the Talmazans? Is your gandfather still alive?

lenochkat: Re: surnames
According to my grandpa, my great grandfather had two brothers and a sister. One of his brothers (Avram) fought in Spain but then came back to Moscow. The other 2 siblings stayed in Russian/Ukraine. He thinks that there might be a relationship with farther ancestors (i.e. on the great great grandfather or great great great grandfather level). Unfortunately he doesn't know anything about my great great grandfather's siblings or his father/uncles/aunts.
