my great-grandfather came from hungary and his name was Michael - mother's name was Juliana (english translation..). His name was Mihaly, hers was Joliana - looking to see if there are any matches to this family over in hungary. My great grandmother used to send packages over to hungary to the Tarkanyi's. My grandfather had changed his last name to Tarkany when entering the country thru ellis island.
Looking for any ancestors. Mihaly Tarkanyi married Helen Hege in New Jersey. (Helen Hege is my great grandmother).

The I on the end of your surname would suggest that there is a village/town by that name. There was a village named Nagy Tarkany and Kis Tarkany in the Zemplen megye.

Now those villages are in Slovak Republic and called Velke Trakany and Male Trakany (respectively).

is listing a surname TARKANYI in Male and Velke Trakany.

3 TARKANYs and 31 TARKANYIs passed thru Ellis Island.
Mihaly / Michael Tarkanyi that passed thru EI is from Mateszalka which is in Szatmar megye Hungary.
The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) website is listing a church records of Mateszalka. You can order the films and gather ancestral information.

i know these posts are several years old now but I know very little about my family history above me grandparents apart from that they lived in hungary prior to the war. if anyone has information about the tarkanyi name and those who emigrated to england during the war I would be very greatful

Hi,
my name is Edit TÃ¡rkÃ¡nyi. My grandfather, SÃ¡ndor TÃ¡rkÃ¡nyi was lost in World War II. in 1944. He lived in Nagydobos with his family. He was soldier during the war. We know, that he out of the country.
His mother's name Eszter Ãcs, and he was born in Szamosszeg.
