bfernand: Searching My Ancestors From Nyiradony
Kedves,

My name is Brian Fernandes and I live in the United States. I am a descendent of the Terdiks from Nyiradony, Hungary, and I am researching my family history. More specifically, the informal family name is Csikar Terdik. Unfortunately, I do not speak Hungarian so it is difficult for me to communicate with many of the people I have met in my search.

My great-grandfather Laszlo Terdik (born 1879) left Nyiradony in the early 1900s, though I do not know what year. He traveled back and forth between Hungary and Coatesville, Pennsylvania, here in the U.S. for a while. Eventually his wife Maria Kujbush Terdik (born 1884) and two of their children joined him in Coatesville in December, 1922. At the time, Laszlo and Maria actually had three children. The oldest, Laszlo, first went to Toronto, Canada, with other relatives (Illis Terdik and family), then snuck into the United States later but was caught and deported back to Hungary. Eventually, he made his way to South America. He had four children, all of whom stayed in Hungary. His daughter, Illona, lives in Debrecen. She and I have written to each other several times. She has three children, Bela, Illona, and Csaba. His three other children were: Maria Terdik, who married Bela Bugy and had two children, Mihaly and Julia; Laszlo Terdik, who’s wife I don’t know but who had four children, Julia, Maria, Piroska, and Katalin; and Anna Terdik, who married Mihaly Ples and had four children, Maria, Eva, Laszlo, and Mihaly.

Laszlo and Maria’s second oldest son was Gyorgy, who was my grandfather (mother’s father). He was born in 1910 and baptized at the (Catholic) Church of Nyiradony. The third son was Mihaly, born in 1912. Once they reached the United States, they never returned to Hungary.

It is worth telling you that the Terdiks who settled in Toronto, Canada, went by the name Terdik, while the Terdiks who came to Coatesville went by Ferdik. However, I know for certain that my family’s real name is Terdik. All of the Terdiks (Ferdiks) who came to Coatesville have since died, although their children and grandchildren are still living in the area. I believe there are still one or two relatives who went to Canada that are still living.

Laszlo and Maria were married in May, 1902. Their parents also lived in Nyiradony, and to the best of my knowledge never left Hungary. Laszlo’s parents were Mihaly Terdik and Anna Vas. From a wedding certificate I know that Mihaly died prior to 1902. Maria’s parents were Janos Kujbush and Flora Szilagyi. Both were alive as of 1902. All of these people were members of the Catholic Church of Nyiradony. Laszlo and Maria eventually had two more children here in the U.S., Anne Ferdik Illes and John Ferdik. Also, Maria had three sisters, one of whom was named Julia Kujbush Cegna.

I have spoken with several people with the last name Terdik by way of the internet over the last year. Unfortunately, none of them were relatives.

Hi

Did you go thru the church records of Nyiradony that LDS-Mormons filmed?
Did you take a look in Ellis Island website? There is a TERDIK, Laszlo from Nyiradang (sp?)I did not go and check his manifest.
A nice number of KUJBUSs came thru Ellis Island from Nyiradony.
You need to register to EI site but no money.

Thanks for your reply. I have used ellisisland.org extensively and found almost all of my immigrant ancestors that way. I am also a member of ancetory.com, although that site has little by way of foreign records. I found the name of the pastor at the Catholic Church in Nyiradony yesterday and plan to send him the letter I sent to all the Terdiks in Nyiradony prior to Christmas.

Linda: Re: Searching My Ancestors From Nyiradony
Brian- I also have relatives in Nyiradony, Hungary. I have been there many times. I have been to the church - met the priest - got copies of baptismal records. My cousin Sandor Erdei (he's about 70) is married to Anna Terdik Erdei - she's about his age. I wonder if she's related? I took pictures of the headstones that said Terdik in the cemetery - too.

Brian-

I hope you come back and read these reply's!! I found Laszlo Terdik arrived in Philadelphia in August 1914 on a ship called the Brandenburg. They sailed out of Bremen, Germany. He arrived with $20. You're right - he went to Coatesville. He sailed with at least two other people from Nyiradony. Hope this helps!!

Linda,

Yes, that's him. I found this record last summer. He was in the U.S. prior to that as well but I haven't found evidence of exactly when.

Thanks for looking.

The Original Handwritten Manifest in error doesn't link up with the Passenger Record, it's called a Lost Manifest. Actually just missplaced, I look it up and saved the link for you:

Gerry O'Connell: Re: Searching My Ancestors From Nyiradony
My wife is a first generation Canadian and she was a Terdik. Parents were born in Hungary. Father,Janos, I believe, was born in Bokony in 1905 and mother, Rozsika, was born in Debrecen in 1912. They came to Canada in 1928 and 1930. My wife was naturalized in the USA in 1999.
We have been doing some research on my wife's grandfather, Gyorgy. However, we have run into many stonewalls.
We think he came through Ellis Island in 1909, stopped in Coatesville and made it to the Dayton, Ohio region. Might have died in 1924 in an industrial accident. He may have been born circa 1879 and had a brother Mihaly. Three children were Gyorgy (1904), Janos (1905) and Maria (DOB unknownw). Gyorgy stayed in Hungary and Maria died single in 1938.

Gerry O'Connell: Re: Searching My Ancestors From Nyiradony
Brian, I have traced some Terdik history and this may be of some to you. My wife, Rosie, was a Canadian from Niagara Falls, now a naturalized USA citizen (1999). I have been interested in finding information about her grandfather, Gyorgy, and have come up with some ancestral info. He died in an industrial accident in the Dayton, OH, area in July 14, 1916 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Dayton. I am not 100% sure when he arrived in the USA and if he made one or trips thru Ellis Island. It is known that he married Juliana Kiss (DOB 07/1892) in 1903, and subsequently had 3 children: Gyorgy (04); Janos (05); and, Maria (07). His wife passed away in May 1909, and this may have been a reason for him going back to Hungary.
I have found that the parents of Gyorgy Terdik (DOB 1879) were Janos Terdik (DOB 1843) and Juliana Meszesan (DOB 1854). His wife, Juliana Kiss’s parents were Demeter Kiss (DOB 1839) and Maria Vegso (DOB 1843) These 2 were married 11/1864.
The grandparents of Gyorgy Terdik were Gyorgy Terdik/Anna Czirjak and Janos Meszesan/Dobran Boebala. I have no birth, marriage or death records for them. They may have been immagrants to Hungary from the east.
I have seen several ship’s manifests that show a Gyorgy Terdik transiting the Atlantic. The first is on the ship Pretoria, that departed Hamburg on April 9, 1907. The 2nd voyage is in the opposite direction aboard the Lucanis on March 8, 1908. The manifest shows a 29 year old Gyorgy Terdik going from New York to Liverpool with a continuing ticket to Budapest. The 3rd manifest shows a Gyorgy Terdik arriving Ellis Island March 2, 1909. the listing is on line 22. There is a 4th manifest that shows a 44 year old Gyorgy Terdik arriving Ellis Island in 1912. If there was a typo error and the age was 34, then this age would fit my wife’s grandfather. This individual was heading for Dayton and listed the acquaintance to see as Gyorgy Czirjak. Coincidentally, this is the maiden name of his gradmother on his father’s side.
There is a possibility that some of the ancestors may mix in with your ancestors.
