Ian TOMES: TOMES Genealogy Research
I live in Somerset, South West England, and have been researching the family history and genealogy of TOMES families for some years now. I was recently contacted by a TOMES in Erdokertes seeking help, but I was unavle to do so as I have no data on this surname in Hungary. If anyone has, I would be interested to hear from them. Thankyou. Ian Tomes.

Ian,
Not Tomes, just trying to help.
Are your ancestors are from Hungary or Romania?
I see 3 Tomesti in Romania, which was Hungary before 1920. Do you know which one you're connected to:

Tomeşti, Harg. Co. [RO]/ Csíkszenttamás, Csík Co. [HU]
Tomeşti, Hun. Co. [RO]/ Tomesd, Hunyad Co. [HU]
Tomeşti, Timis Co. [RO]/ Tamásd, Krassó Co. [HU]
___________________________

I've noticed in your post Erdokertes, it must be a local name dialect, because I don't see it in my extensive placename databases.
Erdő=Forest, kertes=gardened in Hungarian.
From the 4 placenames Kertes previously in Hungary, it's probably the one in Romania today:

Prunişor, Arad Co. [RO] / before 1920 Kertes, Arad Co. [HU]

RADIX Surname Index has the followings, is any of the placenames looks familier:

Ian Tomes: Re: TOMES Genealogy Research
Hope this works, as I have never used this site before my last message. Thanks for your message. Erdokertes does exist (but I had to search the internet a bit to find it). It is some 30 kms North East of Budapest and about 6 km West of Galgamacsa. Longnitude 19o 19' East, latitude 47o 40' North. I would guess it is a new domitory town serving Budapest commuters. Thanks for your other points. At present, I only have a small handful of facts about this family, but understand they came from Nagyvarad (aka Oradea), in Western Romania in 1989.

Hi Ian,

Thank you for you input, I've learned an important fact from it by digging a little deeper.

The official Hung. searchable placename website, which was recently remodeled, is using the 100% correct Hung. letters Ő,ő. These are can't be duplicated with US keyboard, the best we can get Ő,ő, which are looks close enough, but doesn't work with the search function. And since Erdőkertes is only exists since 1956, naturaly it doesn't shows up in other, older databases.

Anyway, I should have just Googol-d, but then I wouldn't learned the valuable lesson:
http://www.erdokertes.hu/ is a good size village of 6,000.

Now, tried the search with different letters, and it seems works with the other Hung. letters Ö,ö, so not everything lost, in a way thanks to your reply.

With Regards,
Joseph

p.s. the search:

History of ERDŐKERTES

Formation of village

Year of formation: 1956

Name of village formed: Erdőkertes

Name of village, town of which the village was formed: Veresegyház (Name of the settlements part of the village, town of which the village was formed: Erdőváros, Feketepuszta (part of), Háromház, Kígyóstó (part of), Paskomszőlők, Tisztviselőtelep)
