btomko: maps
I am looking for some maps of the Zemplen area,c. 1900. I would also like soem recommendations for Hungarian History at the same time.
Our family settled in Wilkes-Barre-three brothers and ??? sisters. Michael and John Tomko raised their families in Warrior Run (Peely Post Office),PA from about 1905 -their families are still there.
Michael was married to Mary Plichta, who had been born in
Cleveland, Ohio, whose family returned to Hungary. I would guess they were married around 1900.
If this info rings any bells, I would like to hear from you.
Thank You,
Barbi

What language did your ancestor speak?
Those surnames TOMKO and PLICHTA do sound Slavic and they do show up in Slovak Republic's phone book.

Here is a 1910 Hungarian megye map :
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Zemplen.
but you still need to locate a precise name of a town in order to proceed with the research.
Here is a map of Austria-Hungary empire :

In this A-H empire there were about 12 language spoken, so that is why I ask what language did your ancestor speak?

Take a look in Ellis Island website. You might find your ancestor passing thru that port.
