I would like any information on the family name, spelled by my family Umatum. Perhaps more correctly, Umathum. My grandfather immigrated to the US in perhaps 1911 and lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I only know of him as being from Hungary. He was Michael Umatum (Umathum, his wife was Antonia Frank. In some immigration information, also is listed as birth location - other: monon szohest. Does anyone recognize this? Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Zlatica : Umatum, Umathum
Hi lisab,

4 UMATHUMs came thru Ellis Island and a Michael among them from Moson Szolnok, Hungary. www.ellisislandrecords.org
Hungary's phone book www.magyartelekom.hu/fooldal.vm does list UMATHUM. Check LDS-Mormons site for church records of Mosonszolnok which you can order and gather ancestral information off of. Do post, check out Ancestry and Genforum boards, if you have not already.

Thank you Zlatica for your information. Its difficult because the names change here often. My grandfather was Michael, Michal,Mike, and surname Umatum/Umathum. I did find him and my grandmother, Antonia (listed in 1920 as Antonie, and in 1930 as Antoinette!) in the US census and city directories for that era. I have little or no information on Antonia except that maybe her surname before marrying was Frank/Franks/Franck. I will keep working on this when I don't have to earn a paycheck. Lisa

Zlatica : Re: Umatum, Umathum
Your welcome Lisa.
Does the 1930 census say Na-naturalized, Al-alien or Pa-first paper? Did they marry in US? If yes, have you located their state marriage application or church marriage document? How about the childrens baptismals records? Someplace there should be a precise place of birth. Spelling Michal is Slavic/Slovak.
Antoinette's (French spelling) surname could be FRANEK or FERENC.

Sharon Umatum: Re: Umatum, Umathum
Lisa, My husbands family is Umatum. His Great Grandfather Steven Umatum left Hungary/Austria in 1881. Lived in Papillion, Nebraska, USA from age 61 on. Most of the Umatums are in Nebraska still. We once heard but were not sure the name Umatum could have been Umathum. I was on the internet and just typed in Umatum and went to the different sites and found RadisForum and saw Umathum. I don't know if there is a relation. We had heard there might be another Umatum Family in the USA. My husbands Aunt researched all the information on our side. I would be happy to send you the family tree she created. It might help.
