Hi my familiy's original last name was Vdovjak and was changed when they moved to America and I am trying to locate relatives from Slovakia, which is where the records indicate my great-grandfather was from...

You need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed with the research.
In any case, the Slovak Republic's phone site is at :
www.zoznamst.sk is listing the surname VDOVJAK and VDOVIAK.

32 VDOVJAKs passed thru Ellis Island and most of them were from Miava / Myjava, Slovak Republic. The town of Myjava's phone book is listing VDOVIAK. There were also 10 VDOVIAKs passing thru EI and they too were from Miava / Myjava.
