Zlatica : Wilk
Wilky

You need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed with the research. Would be to your advantage if you would post some of your ancestral information.

www.rat.de/kuijsten/navigator
www.google.com
1877 WILKs passed thru Ellis Island. You might want to start there.
In 1990 in Poland there were 230095 WILKs.

www.halgal.com
www.genealogienetz.de/reg
Do you know what language your ancestor spoke?
The Slovak Republic's phone site is listing some Wilks.
www.zoznamst.sk
Hungary's phone site www.matav.hu/english/index.html is listing Wilk.
Austria's phone book www.herold.at too is listing Wilk.
Those are just some countries that I checked.

Hello Zlatica!

Thanks for your help!

What I know: My grandfather's father was Károly Wilk (b.1889), his father was Károly Velk (b.1864) and his father was Vendel(?) Velk. I do not why they changed the familyname from Velk to Wilk. It might was originally Wilk and it was misspelled somewhere to Velk and than it was changed back to Wilk?

Zlatica : Wilk / Velk
Your welcome.

A question remains. Do you know a name of a town where your grandfather was born?

10 VELKs passed thru Ellis Island. Surname WILK and VELK lists in Hungary's phone book.
www.matav.hu/english/index.html

The Polish alphabet has a W and no V and Slovak and Czech has V and no W. Since the letter W makes the Slavic V sound than the W was used in the new country if the surname started with a V.

Zlatica : Wilk
Hi,

Is Karl WILK that lists in SSDI with a birthdate of Nov. 3, 1889 your ancestor?
http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
You can request his SS-5Form which should have some information that you need to further your research.
If your ancestor was naturalized citizen those papers too would have information. Need that name of a village.
