| Hello! What a find! My great grandfather was Mihaly Schonvizner, b.circa 1871 in Iglo (Szepes) and emigrated to the US circa 1903 to settle in Cleveland, Ohio. I believe he had a brother named Joszef who also came to Ohio with a wife (Maria) and son (Joszef). Mihaly was married to Terezia Richter, b. 2/29/1883 in Korpona (Hont). Their first daughter (Mary) was born in Korpona. Terezia and Mary came over a year later.
I have had a look at Ellis Island, and found a Mihaly Schonvizner who came over from Mereny in 1897, but I don't think this is my Mihaly, as his age was 8 years too young. I am interested in finding the names of Mihaly's parents, and of Terezia's parents. Family rumor is that he was an orphan. Maybe there is a birth record somewhere? Also a marriage record, because they were married in then Austria-Hungary. Look forward to hearing from anyone! Steve, I would be interested in any information you have about Hungarian and Slovakian Schonvizners, as the area they came from is now part of Slovakia. The surnames Richter and Schonvizner sound more German than Hungarian, but I am told that there were German settlements in those areas. I know that my Schonvizners were not Jewish,...they may have been Catholic. Thanks! | ||
