Moritz married Babete Cohen in London in 1847 10Feb.They were married in The Great Synagog by N. Adler, Chief Rabbi. They had 6 children, 5 daughters and a son who seems to have died in early chilhood. This situation brought Moritz's nephew, Jacob, from Budapest, to marry a daughter Rose in 1872 17July. Also Moritz's wife had died in 1870 12March of what was probably a ruptured appendix. She was 47 and this would mean she was born in 1823. Therefore Moritz was her age or a little older when they married. Mortiz died in 1893 4 March, probably in Briton where he had retired with one of his daughters who did not marry, all the others did. Jacob had 3 children. Edward the eldest, was born in the third quarter of 1873. There was a brother Leopold and the youngest a sister Bertha. Jacob took over the business and later called it Jacob Pillischer and Sons. Only Leo married in 1904 to a Janka Grunberger. Something must have happened to her because any records that mention Leo have him single. I have several old photo's of certificates from pre WW1 that show the business exhibiting through out Europe. Edward seems to have lived in both Paris and London. The family home was in St. John's Wood area. This is the twist. My mother was born Sept 1925. For several years she lived with Jacob and Rose. Jacob died in 1930 and soon after she met her mother. Edward was always called uncle. Her mother Maud was not a Pillischer by any stretch and I have not been able to find out who she was. Jacob even had a clause in his will that if any of his 2 sons should marry outside of the Jewish faith they would lose their inheritance. I have not been able to find any registration of my mother's birth in England. So maybe things were fudged or she was born in France because she moved there with Edward and Maud a few months after Jacob died and they stayed there until Sept 39. If Edward and Maud ever married it was not in England. Edward wanted to send my mother to New York when the war broke out, but Maud would not allow it. I assume that there must have been a family connection in New York. My mother met a handsome Canadian soldier came to Canada and had 3 sons. I'm the eldest.Edward died in 1966 never having seen my mother again and Maud died in 1976 about 3 weeks after my wife and I visited her in Hove. Leo and Bertha both died in the early 50's. So ended the Pillischer name. Moritz's other daughters no doubt had children but not of the Pillischer line. Some of their desendants are no doubt in England. Moritz's microscopes are quite collectable, but as far as the barometer gores I'm afraid I can't help you. My youngest brother has a couple of thermometers made by J. Pillischer and Sons. Tracing the family has been very interesting and frustrating, especially my grandmother, who went by the name of Maud Humphreys, and if anyone reading this has any idea of who she was please let me know. I think she will be harder to find then the barometer. Good luck in your search. Roger | ||
