| Hi fellow Gerleis and all Interested!
a few remarks about our name "..Gerlei with ,,simple,, i could mean connection with family ,,Blue,,....but somewhere the farmers and sevants have been called...example john Gerlei...because he worked on the fields of the rich Gerley.:)" Unfortunately you are not right. In Hungarian the 'i' at the end of a name means from. In this case Gerlei means a person from Gerle village. (there was a village called Gerlefalva in Hungary, now it belongs to Slovakia anc called Girovce) In Hugary it was not a custom to take the name of the feudal lords, who practically owned their bondages. In Hungary the feudal bondage was abolished in 1862. Also in the old Hungarian they used Y and I in writing with the same pronunciation. From late 19th century many people tried to show noblility so at that time many changed their name ot it's spelling. eg. from I to Y. The word gerle is a name of a bird (similar to pigeon) ant it is used in the everyday language. I am thinking about to organize a Gerlei meeting, it is not a very common name, is would be nice to know other Gerleis.. Take care, Gerlei | ||
