Dear Stepan,
My previuos family name was A n t s c h e r l. I am interested to receive further information concerning the roots of my family. As far as I happen to know our name
originates in the Sudeten-German abbreviation of "kleine
Anna-Anny". A certain Asher Antscherl is mentioned in the family saga having lived in the beginnings of the 18th century in the Western part of Bohemia (i.e. Boehmen) nowadays the Czech Republic.

Hi Tsvi,

it`s great to hear from You. Where are You? I have so many!!! things for You, about Your and even my family. Please, write me directly to "stepan.benda -k-u-k-a-c- web.de" -p-o-n-t-
My Mother was born in Batelov 1922. My Grandmother was Ela Antscherl. I have very long, almost complete "Stammbaum" of all Antscherls from all over the World.
The great thing is, that the name "Antscherl", was given during the so called "Josefinian surnamereform" in 1782 only to one family in Batelov exclusively. It means that all Antscherls in the whole world are from one family!!! It can be prooved easily. I have a list of approx. 300 names. There are Antscherls from "Budapestian" (Hungarian) branch to. From Batelov they spred to Vienna (Austria resp.) Prag and Budapest too. I have Photos, documents and other stuff.
By the way, the name is not!!! of "sudeto-german" origin.
Antscherl is typical "austrian"!!! (Vienna art) diminutive of "Anchel", hebr. Engel or so, . The ending
"-erl", You will find f.i. in "Peperl", little Pepi. etc. Antscherl means simply "little Anchel". Batelov ist entirely Czech speaking since midle-age and not situated in so called Sudetenland. The Jews lived in Batelov since 1428 after they were expeled by the Germans from Jihlava(Iglau). In 19 century they spoke often german, becouse since 1782 they were forced to go to german schools. My Grandmother too, spoke german, in spite of fact, that we all are and always were good Czechs rep. "Moravians".
I myself come from Telc, which is near by Battelau, but live now since 1968 in the West (Berlin and so on). But I go as soon as it is possible to my "home", which ist Telc or Batelov respectively.
Please answer me as sonn as possible and excuse my english. My native tongue is czech.

antscherl: Re: Antscherls
Hello,

I coincidentally ran into these threads. My name is Débora Antscherl and I now live in Los Angeles. I have two small companies, one translating/subtitling and another designing handbags. I was born and raised in Barcelona where one Antscherl remains, my aunt, Nora Antscherl, a cardiologist. My father was Michel Henri Antscher, a mathematician, and he died in 1985 at the age of 35. My grandfather was Bernard Antscherl, a pianist and cellist turned entrepeneur/graphic designer and his father Henri (court composer) - I think - and wife were killed in Auschwitz. My great-uncle died about 10 yrs ago, was named Karl Ancerl and remained in the Republic. As I understand, the original name Ancerl was changed to Antscherl when they were forced to move to Austria, where my great-grandfather worked until the Jews were kicked out by the Nazis.
Anyhow, this is the info I have from my own family stories and was wondering if it is compatible with what you have gathered. It is certainly surprising to know that you have gathered a 300 strong list. I have also met some step-uncles from Scottland, also named Antscherl, from my grandad´s previous family right before WWII.

The story in my family, then, goes as follows-- Chechoslovaquia --> Austria --> Scottland --> Belgium --> Venezuela --> Spain --> United States

Sorry to ramble, I got excited after finding out that all Antscherls come from one same family.

Regards,
Debora

jette: Re: Antscherls
Hello Debora, I have just a few days ago found out about this site with the name Ancerl. My name is Jette Henriksen (married name ANCERL). I was married to Ivan Ancerl who died 11 years ago. He was one of two sons of the conductor of the czech philharmonic orcestra ( yes the Karel Ancerl who conducted in Auswich) and his beloved wife Hana Ancerl. They moved to Toronto, Canada in 1967 where Karel became the conductor of the Toronty Symphony Orchestra. I met his son, Ivan, while he was attending the art academy in Copenhagen and eventually came to Toronto with him in 1972. We have a son Nicholas Charles Ancerl born in 1978. My brother in law was Jiri Ancerl and he died about 6 years ago in Prague.
My in laws came from Czechoslovakia, my mother in law told me they came from Moravia. She spoke fluent german as well as czech. She died in 1982. I still miss her. Karel died in 1973, but his music still lives on. I even sometimes hear his music on the radio still.
I remember that my mother in law told me that the name Ancerl originated in Austria.
I just wanted to tell you this and would be glad to hear from you.

Uriel: Re: Antscherls
Hello Stepan,
I have just found a (very) distant relative: Alice Berenhaut, maiden name Antscherl

Born 7. November 1880 in Leipzig, died 6. March 1938 in Chemnitz. Her husband was Martin (Moses) Berenhaut.
Do you have these names on your Antscherl family tree?

Thanks and best regards,
Uri Meretz, Israel

Hi Uri,

how did You find it out? I don't have nor Alice Antscherl, born in Leipzig, nor Berenhaut in my papers until now. It would be nice to know, who was the father of Alice. I could most probably find him in "Matriken" of Battelau. If Alice was born 1880, her father could be born between 1850 and 1860. And it means most probabely still in Battelau. Because the Antscherls started to move out of the town normaly not before 1848.

Stepan Benda: Re: Antscherls
Hi Robin,

as I already have written to Uri, I would like to know, who was the father of Your grandmother Berenhaut. Was she born Berenhaut? If not, what was her maiden name? Otherweise it is difficult to find something about her in Battelau. Because there was not a native family called Berenhaut there as far I know now.
So write me please and I`ll see what can I do for You.

Best regards Stepan

Stepan Benda: Re: Antscherls
Sorry Robin,

maidenname of Alice was Antscherl of course, but the birth-books of the people born 1880 around were destroyed by Nazis during the WW2. So I need the name of the fatherof her, it means of Your grandgrandfather from the motherside.
It could be, we are ralatives. My grandngrandfather was Julius Antscherl born in Battelau 1861 in No 57. If You are interested in more write me directly to my e-mail.
