Susan: Barkacs
My great grandfather, Andras Moczni, came to the U.S. from Cinobana, Lucenec, Slovakia (formerly Szinobanya)accompanied by Janos Barkacs. Later, after settling in Elyria, Lorain Co., Ohio, they always lived near Barkacs families. Besides Janos and Judita, there was also Pal and Emelia or Emmeli Barkacs. At one point, Emilia and her children Bela and Rozalia traveled back to Austria-Hungary with my great grandparents and their children for a visit. It states that Emilia was visiting her mother, Ilona Eibner and my great grandparents were visiting Maria Garay who was my great grandmother's mother.

I am curious as to whether they are townsmen or relatives. Does anyone know of a connection between the Barkacs, Moczni/Moczny, Garaj, or Korim families?

Zlatica : Re: Barkacs
Susan

They could have been related by marriage or could they have been godparents in the "old country"? The church records did not provide any clues?
Surname BARKAC' in Cinobana's phone book and EIBNER in Lucenec. www.zoznamst.sk (area code 47)

Use One Step/ Gray form www.stevemorse.org to locate people that came from Szinobanya and any other (mis)spelling of it (Szinobarya,Szinobaja,Szinobamya,Szinobauja,Szinobanyo,Cinobana,Cinobania). Very interesting to see the names that were in that village at that time.
www.iabsi.com/gen/public could be of help in further research.

jgbma47: Re: Barkacs
I grew up in a Hungarian neighborhood in Elyria, OH. My stepgrandmother was
Judith (Judita) Barkacs. Her husband was John ( Janos)- but he died long before I met her. I knew probably all the Hungarian familes in the neighborhood - attended the Magyar E&R church from age 5 - 14. I don't recall a family of that surname. I have 3 half-brothers with the Barkacs name (Judith was their grandmother). One Randy still lives in Elyria; as does my half sister Karen. I believe all of the older generations have since passed away.

I've begun a geneology of my father's side of the family (Basset) - but have been also gathering information from the Barkacs side for my family) . Doubt that I can give you any currents contacts for your search. Although, I've found the inernet - particularly Ancestry.com a good source.

Take care,

John Bassett
