Carol: Beno / Zipoy
Researching family -- have great-grandmother Mary Zipoy from Zipov, Zemplencka Stolica who married Andrew Beno from Chmielow. They went to America and married in Minnesota in 1902. Any information on family names, or locations would be wonderful! Thank you.

The LDS-Mormons website is listing church records of Leles. You can order the films and gather ancestral information. A site to familiarize yourself with church wording: www.bmi.net/jjaso
Both surnames list in SK's phone book www.zoznamst.sk but none in Leles. Possible that the family has only a cell phone and thus does not show up in the phone book.

Mick: Re: Beno / Zipoy
Andy, your ancestral village Leles is situated in area of eastern Slovakia, some 70 miles east from town Kosice. This village is settled mostly Hungarian speaking people, who are roman-catholics, but there live a lot of greek-catholic people and protestants. This village is famous for its very old monastery.
This monastery was one of only a few places in Hungarian kingdom, where was possible verify a documents or made a copy of documents.
I visited this village several weeks ago. There live some Beno families in Leles and adjacent village Polany.
Do you know what religion were your Beno and Urban ancestors? They might be Lutherans as well. There are two churches in Lelesz, roman-catholic and protestant church in Lelesz. Greek-catholics from Lelesz belong to mother greek-catholic church in village Polany.

I am researching the Zipoy family for a good friend. I am interested in what you have for the family in Slovakia. I suspect that Michael C. (MC) Zipoy and Michael M. Zipoy are cousins. They owned grocery stores (M.C. & Co.) in Minneapolis in the early 1900's. My friend's great grandfather was Michael M. Zipoy, who died at age 39 in 1915. Michael M.'s father is also named Michael. Michael C.'s father is John. Thanks!

Hello,

My great-grandmother was Beno Elza, who lived in Zemplénagárd. Her father's name was Beno Menyhért. They had a title of nobility: lippai. Supposedly they escaped from the Turkish invasion in the 17th century from Lippa to the north. I do not know if someone knows about something about this Beno family...

Doug: Re: BENO
Hey Andy,
I believe Andrew Beno (Bino) is my great grandfather's uncle who is also from Lelesz (now Leles, Slovakia). My great grandfather's name was Imre Bino and his name was changed to James when he came to the US. He married Gisella Stofko who was also from Lelesz. They settled in Ashtabula, OH. I don't know if this information would be helpful to you or not, but I thought I would mention it. If you have any information I would love to learn more about my ancestors.
Thanks!
