| Ken Forbes: Janos Bajor Laraspdek??? | Thank you for the help.
This is what my uncle has to say as far as their language is concerned. I don't know if it helps much.
-- "Speaking about Austria, my Grandmother came from Austria/Hungary. Her first language was Hungarian and Austrian was second - English came in as a poor third. I had to understand German (Austrian) and Hungarian when I visited her as a kid." --
ME? Tessie died in 1954. I was born in 1955. I never knew my great-grandparents.
Theresa was naturalized in either 1906 or 1916. There's a smudge where the "0" or "1" should be.
I did go back and read Stephen Bogar's SSN application (135-07-3223). He lived at 83 Lang Street, Newark in 1936. This is just a few blocks away from my great-grandmother's place at 79 Van Buren Street. Stephen reported his place of birth was Otovci, Jugo-Slavia. His parents were Gyergy Bogar and Zsuzsa Kovacs. I've associated (guess) this Ellis Island Record with him:
Bogar, Stefan
Magyar Hungarian
Otohasa, Hungary
April 19, 1913
30y
M
M

Antwerp, Belgium
Johann's death certificate shows Bojar and Bogar as his surname. His father's birthplace and name were "unknown" on the cert., but his mother is shown as "Daisy" born in "Hungary."
Theresa shows her name as "Tessie Kirchmeyer" on her SSN app. It also shows "Washmay, Hungary" as the place of birth. [No doubt this is because the record taker was phonetically spelling her answers] Her son recorded "Kercmar" as her maiden name on her death cert., along with "Austria-Hungary" as the place of birth. My mother tells me that her maiden name was "Kreczmar." My uncle also recorded "Kreczmar" on her death cert. A Hungarian national tells me it may have been spelled "Krecsmár."
Perhaps, associating Stephen Bogar with my Bogars is premature.
