My great grandparents came from Nyiregyhaza, Hungary sometime in 1900 1908. Their name were Bert Bumbera and Mary Bumbera, her maiden name was Prekop. I don't know if they were married here or in Hungary. I am trying to find out about there family in hungary and any siblings they had, just anything about our family tree as far back as possible. Also about the meaning of our last name Bumbera.
Thank you for any info!

You might want to check into the LDS-Mormons site for church records of Nyiregyhaza.

Some map sites:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Szabolcs megye
A detailed old map:

A good locator:
www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
http://lazarus.elte.hu/autotk
659 people arrived thru Ellis Island from Nyiregyhaza. Using One step/gold form www.stevemorse.org but no BUMBERA or PREKOP. 3 BUMBERAs that arrived from a town starting with N were from Nagyazar. This town is in Slovak Republic. BUMBERA and PREKOP does show up in SK's phone book.

It has come to my attention that your ancestors were from Kotaj and Oros.
I would recommend making a copy of the map where the villages are located.
PREKOP Terez arr. in 1902 from Orosz
PREKUP Janos arr. in 1902 from Oros
BUMBERA Anna and Maria from Oros
BURNBERA (Bumbera) Ilona from Oros

The surnames do not seem typical Hungarian, you know, like Nagy, Farkas, Eszterhazi, Palfy, Andrassy etc.
Looked in Czech dictionary and the word " prekop " means cross drift, cross-cut level
www.slovnik.cz
Same meaning of the word prekop in Slovak.
http://slovnik.zoznamst.sk
Still did not find what bumbera might be. Not sure if it is derived from the word bum - bang or not. Needs more searching.

Thank you so much for all of your help. My family seems to get more and more confusing hahaha! I do know that my great granparents Joseph and Mary spoke hungarian and so did my grandfather growing up. I had contact with an investigator from Budapest and he says has an agent in Nyiregyháza, Hungary. He says that he knows of Bumbera families living there, but here's the catch he needs $800 to research. I think I'd rather stay in contact with good people like yourself who actually enjoy researching familiy tree's and helping families find eachother.I to like the research, the only difference is you seem to know what your doing and I'm at a loss. Thank you again and I'm gonna try to get more info from other family members

You are doing OK. I have been at this genealogy hobby for several years now. Just because the ancestral surnames do not seem typical Magyar/Hungarian that does not mean that your ancestors were not. I do believe that on someones manifest the term used is Magyar. $800 a bit steep when you can go thru the church records yourself and send out a letter to the mayor of the town.
