| subwaysleuth: Re: Fiko | Thanks for your letter. Thanks, this year I learned in a grammar book that "Mariska" is a familiar name. I can give you an answer to part of your question.
On the back of the letter, the return address is written in this way (if I read it correctly, and I am leaving out the accents):
Pilko Karolyne . Budapest
IX Saroksari ut. 38 II. 6
Hungari
Maria married a man named Karoly, unless she lived in the same house with such a person, say as a relation. The letter has to be from about 1920, since that is when they moved to Brooklyn (from Cleveland, Ohio).
According to a record I have of a ship manifest ("Homeric"), Joseph sailed from Cherbourg to Southampton (so he was in Europe) on Oct. 19th, 1922. He was 38, and that checks with my birthdate for him, May 10 (or 15), 1884. And that says, "Fiko, Joseph, Irsa, Hungary."
Since my family lost contact with him after about 1920-22, I do not know where he went after that. Of course, I am eager to know where he ended up.
If this Maria has ever been married to a man named "Karoly" (or lived in his house) - then we may know something.
Also, since Maria is a very common name, there may be others in the family that share the name. I stll think Joseph had a brother/relation in New Haven, Connecticut.
