Did your ancestor, John (Janos) GECSEI come thru Ellis Island?
www.ellisislandrecords.org You might also take a look at GECSEYs manifest. You do not mention the time he came. Was he naturalized citizen or had social security numbers? Those forms would have a place of birth which you need in order to proceed with the research.

I'm sorry,as far as I know my ggrandfather John Gecsey was born in Budapest,Hungary and his wife in Hungary according to a census I found on them in a VA census. When they came to the US I have no idea just a time frame of some where around 1800's.The birth of the 2 oldest children I could find was they where born in ??? Connecticut.Yes,I have been to the EllisIsland site. But will check it out again. Also, not exactly sure Gecsei is a off spelling or not was told by my grandfather that the I was changed to y by immagration. All ggrandparents and grandparents are gone have little to go except for told stories.I do know that one of his sisters who passed away many yrs ago had reverted her spelling from Gecsey to Gecsei either that or it was a miss spelling on SSI part.Thats all I really have to go on.I'm assuming finding him in the census's he had become a naturalized citizen I guess?

Joe Gecsey: Re: J Gecsey married to a E. Nagy
I am a descendant from a lineage of Gecseys and Toths that came to the US in 1910-12. My father, Joe Gecsey, had an older brother, John, and the family lived in the coal mining areas of Virginia and West Virginia. I am now a resident of Oregon.

Lanka: Re: J Gecsey married to a E. Nagy
Interesting that I found this site. I was searching for any information about my grandparents, John and Elizabeth Gecsey, who came by ship from Budapest (at that time two cities) to New York City. They were, maybe 17 years old at the time, met on board ship or in New York, I am not certain, and married. I have their wedding photo. I am the daughter of their youngest child, Eleanor (Lanka sp?). My mother was raised in Dunbar, Virginia, where her father was a coal miner, but died young with black lung disease. Her oldest brother, John, took over and raised the family. At that time, I understand the children were mother, her older sisters, Irene and Elizabeth, brothers, John, Peter, and Grady. I have photos of their days in Virginia and later on when they were married and had children. My grandmother, Elizabeth, remarried after all the children were grown, to a man named John Martin, and they lived in Painesville, Ohio. We visited there a number of times. I remember there was never a visit when a pot of chicken soup wasn't simmering on the back of the stove. Ummmm. I have many fond memories of my grandmother, aunts, but seldom saw my uncles. I remember one special cousin, I believe her name was Rosemary Zea, but I am unsure. My mother always spoke of her and thought she was very special. Mother passed away Dec. 8, 2001, eight months after my father, Robert E. Whitmore passed Feb. 13, 2001. My two brothers and I miss them dearly every day. I have a brother in Ashland, Ohio and a younger brother in Morehead City, North Carolina, where my parents spent nearly 20 years of retirement.
It is so exciting to hear about the Gecsey family. Our youngest daughter is working towards her PhD in archiology at University of Cincinnati and when she was in Europe last year (on a dig) someone said she looked Hungarian. She told them of her great grandparents - Gecsey - and these folks, who were Hungarian, said the family is royalty there. I would like to find out more about it. Last weekend my husband, Ohlen, and I toured the Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, W.Va. and the experience renewed my interest in learning more about my roots. Thanks.

Sandor: Re: J Gecsey married to a E. Nagy
Dear all,

first of all, I would like to introduce myself. So I'm Sándor Gecsey and I live in Hungary, in Győr. I'm 31 years old and married with two children.

So Phyllis had asked me to reflect to this royalty thing. It should be a misunderstanding. Some years ago my father had searched along the family tree in old documents and he found that once our family were a minor noble family, but that's all. In Hungary, since 1526 until 1918 the king (and once a queen) were always from the Habsburg (austrian) family, so the only royalty family now in Hungary is the Habsburg. The most known member of the Habsburgs is now Otto Habsburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Habsburg). He is a great man and as far as I know the only quadriple citizen in the world.

Anyway, anyone have questions of our name, history, the language or anything else, feel free to ask.

With kindest regards,

I'm writing in English, so that the others can understand it too. I fail to see why you have taken such offensive style to answer. I didn't want to "kiss up" to the Habsburgs. I've only tried to explain to our overseas friends a part of the hungarian history, attached to the last hungarian royal family, and that our family isn't connected to them.

Anyway. If you think that the cause of all of our troubles were the Habsburgs than your historic knowledge should be refreshed. And if you think that Otto Habsburg isn't a great man and don't deserve our reward, than you have quickly forgotten, how much have this man done to help Hungary.

Regards,
Sándor Gecsey

p.s.: that topic is from my side closed, I won't answer any further reflections on it.
