Leo Gillich: Gillich/Gilich/Gülich
I am researching the Gillich family from Sanktanna, formerly in Hungary now in Romania. I have found the these variations on the Gillich surname Gilich; Gülich; Gilig; Gilg. The Gillich family originally came from Külsheim, Baden, Germany before settling in Sanktanna. I'd be happy to hear from anyone who is researching these names or the same towns. Thank you.

Dear Leo Gillich!

I am also researching the Gillich family. There are so many variations of this surname: Gilich, Gülch, Gillig.

My ancestors lived in Gyarmat (Hungary). I don't know any connections of Sanktanna (Romania), but it's true, that the Gillich family what I'm researching, has also came from Germany in the beginning of the 18th century (maybe in 1740).

Hi Leo & David

Like you I am researching the Gillich's.

My surname is Gillick, but I have found out that my Great Grandfather came from Germany in teh mid to late 1800's and changed his name to Gillich (due to anti-German sentiment in England at the time so my father said).

Any leads you have on the Gillich's in Germany would be fantastic. I have my Grandfather's birth certificate but am having trouble deciphering my Great Grandfather's first name - At the moment I think it says Jorge or maybe Joseph.

Anyway, please be in touch and we can take it from there

Did you try posting your document on Germany's Ancestry board? Possible someone there can decipher some more information.

Hi Mark:
Somewhere in my research I saw information on lines of Gillich/Gillick in Scotland and Ireland. My wife's family is from Scotland so have been doing alot of research on her side as well.

My line of Gillichs were living in Kuelsheim, Mosbach, Baden, Germany back to at least the early 1600's. My 4x ggfather left there around 1754 and settled in the Sanktanna area (of Hungary/Romania). Sanktanna is part of the Banat region in Hungary/Romania which has quite a few forums dedicated to it. Let me know if any of these areas are familiar.

I haven't come across a 'Jorge' but of interest, Gyorgy is the Hungarian version for the German name Georg. Does your Grandfather's birth certificate show what area of Germany he was born in? I have accumulated some information on different Gillich families in Germany and elsewhere.

Here is a website showing old German handwriting which may help decipher your Grandfather's certificate: http://www.dvhh.org/research/gene_aid/ger_writing.htm

Just found info one of the Scotland Gillick families: William Charles Gillick, born 1881, Cuilhill(?), Scotland; married Elizabeth Edgar; five children: Lawrence, Sadie, Elizabeth, Joseph (Joe) and Jim. Lawrence settled in Canada. No more info on other children.

Catherine: Re: Gillich/Gilich/Gülich
Good afternoon from Melbourne Australia,

I have been doing some research on the GILLICH/GILLICK surname for my sister who lives in England, for her late husband's family. I've been browsing through mahy sites hoping to get some guidance because I have very little info to start with.
Henry William GILLICH first showed up on the 1891 census in London age 22 years, his occ. Baker Confectioner born Germany. He was living with another family named BECK also born Germany and a Baker.
I obtained his marriage cert. and he stated that his father was named George Gillich occ. Master Builder.
Any help of where to search next would be most welcome.
Thanks
Catherine

Hi Leo

Thanks for the info. I am sure that I am not a Scottish Gillick/h as my great great grandfather's Census return states Germany.

I would love to connect my Gillich to yours and will persue more information via some of the sites you suggested
