Brian: Groschl Surname
My Grandfather, Vendel Groschl or Wendell Greschl, died before my parents were married and I know very little about him and his family. I found a copy of his baptismal record and with the help of my associate who is from Romania, I was able to decipher some of the information and found additional information on the Ellis Island web-site. He came to the United States with his Mother and siblings in July 1913. Their country of origin was listed as Szilberek, Hungary. My Great grandmother’s name was Magdolna Raymann and Great Grandfather’s name was Andreas.

If anyone out there can point me in the right direction to find out more information (I am slowly going through all of the web-site hits for key words) about my Grandfather’s family, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you

An old 1910 Hungarian megye map:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Bacs-Bodrog to locate Szilberek.
Take a look in this site: www.genealogienetz.de/reg/ESE/dsinfo.htm
The town of Szilberek is now Brestovac, Yugoslavia/ Serbia. Check the church records.
Here are two sites for church wording:
www.bmi.net/jjaso
www.genealogy.ro/dictionary
A first name translation website:

Your welcome Brian,

Check out Ancestry and Genforum. Get yourself on a mailing list. Possible that all GROSCHLs coming thru EI from Szilberek/Spilberek/ are related to your ancestor.

Zlatica:

Unfortunately, the link for the http://www.bmi.net/jjaso site is not working now, and I didn't get a chance to use it. Do you have any suggestions? I did view the site originally and it was really helpful, but I never printed it out.

Do you know how to gain access to birth/death certificates or batmismal records in the pre 1900's in Europe/Hungary?

Thanks again and take care!

You are so right. On every John Jaso site that I find, it says not found. I did not make a print of the site.
The LDS-Mormons site has a Hungarian Word List in PDG file that you can download.
Did you look in www.genealogienetz/de/reg/ESE/dsinfo.htm site? Seems that LDS is holding church records 1826-1895. Anything there good for your research? You need to order the records and than go to Family History Center Library to view them.
