Mark Hoferitza: Slovak/Magyar Connection
Hello All, I am trying to research my family in Slovakia. I'm guessing that Hoffericza is a Hungarian spelling of Hoferica, my family name. Since the part of Slovakia they lived in was once occupied by Hungarians. The town is Svaty Martin or Sventmarton. I'm hoping someone out there can help.
Thanks,
Mark Hoferitza

Mark,

The town of Szentmarton aka Svaty Martin is now just Martin, Slovak Republic.

www.zoznamst.sk SK's phone site is listing the surname HOFERICA.
2 HOFERICAs, 6 HOFERICZAs passed thru Ellis Island. Yes, there was an Hoffericza but that could be a transcribing error. To locate an Ellis Island manifest in One Step use :

Your welcome.
It is all in pronounciation, as they say.
The TZ in English and CZ in Magyar make the C sound in Slavic language.

Mark

Both of the villages's names are misspelled.

Ricsovaralja is now Hricovske Podhradie, SK and the surname HOFERICA lists in that village's phone book.

Nagyszoczocz. There was a village named Szoczocz in Turocs megye which now is called Socovce, Slovak Republic.
Nagy-Szoczocz is now Socovce, Slovak Republic.
Kis-Szoczocz is now Stranka, Slovak Republic

One of the Hofericzas has that the town is in Turocz megye.

Can anyone tell me where this village is?

Krusivaralja

It was listed in Hungary on an Ellis Island database as the residence of Jan Hoferica.

Another misspelled name of a town.

It is Hricsovaralja which is another old name for the village now known as Hricovske Podhradie.

Mark,
I just saw your listing for Hofferica. My grandmother was born in Hricovske Podhradie. I visited a distant relative of hers in 2001. His name was Jozef Hofferica and he lived at House #57 in Hricovske Podhradie.
