Dear Liz,
First, you have to talk to your parents, grandparents, where did they and their parents had been born, when and where from did they immigrate, what language they spoke. Write everything down and organize it in a tree form. Did you get a form in the school to fill out? My kids got one, I uploaded here for you, so you can see how is it looks in case you didn't.
These are the Jamriska datas at RadixIndex, not necessarily your family, but show them to your (g)parents, to see if any of the placenames looks familiar to them. These datas are from the area of historical Hungary. Since the 1920s new countries have been created, so it's possible that the places your family came from are not in Hungary anymore.
Greetings from California, and good luck.

Joseph gave you a head start. You need to locate a precise place of birth among the US documents in order to proceed with the research. Take a look in www.ellisislandrecords.org at the JAMRISKAs that came thru that processing center to America. I do find JAMRIS^KA (Slovak spelling) in Slovak Republic's phone book. www.zoznamst.sk

I'm Gerald Jamriska, son of Walter Jamriska, Grandfather of Stephan (Istvan) Jamriska. I am also looking for more data. My father and grandfather came from this village of Jeczenye aka Jaszenya-Jasenie and arrived in US in 1912. Grandmothers name was Antonia (Nieter) Jamriska. Her parents were Joseph Nieter and Mary (Kubancik) Nieter.
Thats all I have now.
