Lee: Kabilyo from U.S
It is interesting to see how far and wide the name Kabilyo (Kabiljo) exists.
I have found people with the same surname from Yugoslavia (where my father was from), to the U.S., to South America and Israel.

As far as I know, my brother and I are the only Kabilyo's here in the United States. If there are any others, please feel free to contact me.

My father passed in 1970, and my knowledge of the family history is limited.

I do not know if we are all related somehow, but I send greeting to you all.

harry kabiljo (havilio): Re: Kabilyo from U.S
I was born in Belgrade, Jugoslavia in 1930. My father was born in Jerusalem and belongs to the Havilio family who has been living uninterruptedly in Jerusalem since the end of the 15th century.
During world war II we emigrated to Argentina. When we applied for the argentine citizenship my father required his original birth certificate in Jerusalem and it came with the family name of Havilio. So we had to change our surname from Kabiljo to Havilio.
Therefore I have good reasons to suppose that the Kabilios or Kabiljos are originally Havilio. I and my children are the only Havilios in Argentina. My younger brother Saul Havilio lives in Chile. For more details I would be glad to keep in touch with you.

Hi Harry, I beleive the pictures I have taken of some Kabiljo burial stones are inscribed both as ie., "Juda Kabiljo" and then also in Hebrew. In Hebrew the surname is however spelled with what looks like an H then an A then a V. I can not see a L, but can make out the Y and the ee and oh sounds. This would seem to support the Havilio surname. Please let me know if you would be interested in seeing the pictures I have taken.

Malcolm writes in his discussion of the Bosnian Jews and Gypsies, “One intriguing story involves the fate of a Jew from Travnik, Moses Chavijo, who converted to Islam, took the name Dervis Ahmed, and began to rouse the local Muslims against the Jews. In 1817 the leaders of the Bosnian Jews complained of his attacks, and had him tried and executed. Some of his followers later complained to the next governor of Bosnia, Ruzdi-pasa, who seized the opportunity to squeeze some money out of the Jews: he commanded that they pay a recompense of 500,000 groschen, and seized ten leading Sarajevo Jews, including the rabbi, threatening to kill them if the payment were not made. The end of the story, however, is that a crowd of 3000 Muslims took up arms and demanded the Jews’ release – which was promptly done.”

I was born in Skopje, former Yugoslavia in 1957. Since 1965 I have been living in Belgrade. My grandfather, David Kabiljo born in Jerusalem, is a brother of your father. So, dear Harry, we are very close relatives. My elder brother, Goran, lives in Belgrade too. I would like to keep in touch with you.
