The English Y gives the J sound in Slavic languages. It is all in pronounciation. A spelling Kayatin would sound Kajatin to a Slovak person. Is your name Kajatin pronounced as such (Kayatin) or the J is pronounced as Jay?

The Ellis Island website is listing 11 KAJATINs, 2 KAYATINs that passed thru that port to America.

One phone listing for Kajatin shows up in Slovak Republic.

TKAYATIN: Kayatin
I am the grandson of James Kayatin. I was not aware that Kayatin came from Kajatin. This is the first I heard of this and would like to know more about. Has anyone heard of James Kayatin? I believe he has a sister who is a nun.

You need to locate a name of a town for your ancestor in order to proceed with the research.

The Social Security Death Index is listing 19 KAYATINs and there is a James. Possible he is your ancestor.
You can request his SS-5Form and there would be some information that you need for your research.

My grandfather's name was James. He had a sister who was a nun who lived in Michigan. She may have moved to Florida, I am not sure. James was the oldest Kayatin I am aware of. He passed away in November but I am not sure what year. My parents I am sure could tell me.

lisa: Kayatin, Kajatin
I am the daughter of Stephen Julius Kayatin (died 1997) and Ann Staskewicz Kayatin (died 2001, form California, Pa). I have a sister, Stephanie Ann Kayatin Lemp. My dad grew up in Daisytown, Pa and went to Centerville High School. He had 2 brothers, William (died, Lorain, Oh)and Albert Louis (died, Gary, Ind.). My grand-parents were Joseph Kayatin and Josephine Kiss Kayatin (lived in Gary, Ind for a short time). Both of my parents have passed on and are buried in Belleville Cemetary (Pa) a few rows away from my grandparents. I have done some family research. If interested email with your adress and I will be happy to send what I have. The nun mentioned on the message board does live in Michigan, Mary Kayatin. The family is from Kisrat which is in Ung county Hungary...the very north-east part. I have tried to do some research on the meaning of 'Kayatin', I am going on the assumption that 'atin' perhaps may mean 'son of'...just a very haphazard guess. I have also done some further research and found that Kayatin is actually a derivative of a longer name. I do not have that particular information with me but will try to post later this week.
Just found this website, but will be back!
Lisa
PS My dad had a funeral service in Daisytown at the Hungarian church...many people showed up but as I was the extreme baby of the family I did not know many of the people...however my sister did...Also am surprised that there are any Kayatins left in Hungary...always heard that my grand-father and his brother tried to bring the whole family over to the states:o)....Does anyone have any information on any of the Kayatins in the military in Hungary before the move to the US???

Lisa: Re: Kayatin
Hi,
If I remember correctly (without digging into my files) the church you mentioned is the one that my dad attended as a child. My mother and I had a memorial service for him the summer of '97 and many people attended. Isn't it a small white church at the top of a long and winding road?
My mother was supposed to have contacted the minister (at the time it was a lady) to help locate any old church records, but I do not think that she ever followed through.
If it is the same church then I do know my grand-parents and uncles would have attended that church...Josef and Josephine Kayatin and William, Stephen and Albert Kayatin.
If you know of how I may obtain any information on church records I would appreciate it:o)
thank you in advance for any help you may provide!

jeffreyakash: Re: Kayatin
Dear Lisa,

The church you have mentioned in Daisytown on top of Crescent Heights is the Daisytown United Presbyterian Church. It was built and dedicated in 1918 and had its foundings on the Calvinist Hungarian Reformed churches, of which I still attend one here in Pittsburgh.

The female layminister you mentioned was Ann Painter, and she had very little interest in the Hungarian heritage of the church, so I am not surprised by your lack of response.

The church coordinator, Eleanor Berczik (my mother's oldest sister), has relocated to Connecticut, but please contact me at "JeffreyAKash-at-AOL-dot-com" and I will put you in direct contact with current church personnel.

Also, as much of my mother's family is buried in the Beallsville cemetery (as is much of our church's families), I can even take digital photos of your family's stones for your records to send to you.

hilaryh: Re: Kayatin, Kajatin
Hello all. My name is Hilary Hoak... I am the grand-daughter of Barbara Lillian Kayatin-Bigrigg (Richeyville, PA)... great-grand-daughter of Alexander "Sandor
and Helen Suich-Kayatin (also of Richeyville, but Helen was born in Baxter, VA). My great-great grandfather is Joseph Kayatin (born is Kisrat, Hungary). And his wife Julia Palotai Kayatin (Kisrat, Hungary). I am also the niece of Regina Sakach-Kayatin. My family resides in Amherst/Lorain Ohio... and am related to most of you out there one way or another. My grandma (Barbara) as well as my aunt Regina all graduated from Centerville High School- Barbara being the Class of 1942 Valadvictorian.
My family, while living in PA, attended the Hungarian Reformed Church, on top of the hill in Daisytown. My grandmother Barbara, passed away in 2002... and my great-grandmother Helen, just recently passed away in April of 2004. I am probably the youngest generation of Kayatin's left... that until I have children.

Lisa, I'm a little confused about this... obviously we are related... And I know that I am related to William because we have stilled talked to them seeing he was a minister in Lorain :-)... But from my understanding... your grandpa and my great-great grandfather are the same person. But yet... you said your dad had two brothers... I think you're missed a 3rd... because my great-grandfather, Alex *Sandor* Kayatin was also his brother. I just thought you might want to know that!

Will Kayatin: Kayatin
I am Dr. Will Kayatin, son of William F. Kayatin Sr., grandson of Alex and Mary Kayatin of western, PA. I am 40 years old.

I have been disconnected from the Kayatin family tree for most of my life. My mother did not stay married to my father for any great length of time. I lived with my father in western KY during my teens, but he did not stay connected to the family with the exception of Margaret. She lived in Cheleroi (sp.), PA., and was the oldest of his four sisters. Helen was his other sister, but I cannot remember the names of his other two sisters.

My wife (Montana) and I now make our home in Jackson, KY, after stints at SUNY, NY, Univ. of TX, Texas Tech, and E. New Mexico Univ. Although a History professor by trade, I manage a regional campus for Morehead State University.

My father, William, passed away in 1982 at age 62, and was buried in Hopkinsville, KY. He retired from the Army at Ft. Knox, KY. He fell in love with the state from that experience and relocated back to KY late in life (1970s), which was when I joined him. He was a wonderful father and friend to me!! I think of him often, especially when I walk into the woods on my farm to deer hunt. It was something special that we enjoyed together.

I have an older, half brother Kenneth W. Kayatin (whereabouts unknown), an older half sister Jann Kajatin (Louisville, KY), an older half sister Cathy Campos (Chicago), and a younger sister Scarlett Kayatin (Dallas, TX). My wife and I just brought home a baby daughter Brianna Summer. I have a 10 year old son from a previous marriage who lives in Buffalo, NY--Austin William Kayatin.

I welcome any correspondence with family. It was neat to read everyone's comments and recollections. I never realized there were so many of us. It's amazing!!
