| liz515: Kaufmann Zala County | | I am trying to find information about the family of Janos/John Ferdinand Kaufmann who came from Esztergaly/Nagyhorvati village in Zala County. He was of German ethnicity but Hungarian citizen. He emigrated to the US around 1901 (to Pennsylvania) but made a trip back between 1901 and 1906 when he came out with his wife Marie Endresz/Andress and settled in Pennyslvania and then New Jersey with 2 sons, John and Emil, both born in US. Between 1910 and possibly outbreak of WW1 or after, John and Marie moved back to Hungary and remained there for good. In 1926, their son John emigrated to US and in 1929 Emil followed as they were both US born citizens. There were supposedly other siblings who were born in Hungary and remained there with their parents. A rift apparently occured between this family and nothing was ever heard from the German-Hungarian Kaufmanns again. I understand that most censuses were destroyed therefore it is difficult to do family research in Hungary without going there. If anyone has any information or could give me some pointers on where to start researching this family, would be wonderful. Are there searchable emigration records for passengers going FROM the United States TO European ports as at least I might be able to find out when they went back to Hungary? Thank you. Liz |
