Vivian: KOHN/Szobrancz

Attached is a picture of my great-grandmother Sali (Sara) KOHN MOSKOVITS. She was born in 1846 and died in Michalovce in 1924. She was married to Markusz MOSKOVITS and lived in Szobrancz. This picture was taken in Budapest about 1910.

Was your grandmother from Gava..My great grandparents were Kohn .. We went there to see my ancestries homes and vineyards. I dont know if you were of Jewish Heritage but our family is... Everthing was taken by the Nazis.. but the Inn is still there if you want to see pictures of the town I will email them to you....my names in Hungary were Kohn, Rauchman, Knapp my grandmother was one of 13 children here name was Ethel, some of her sisters were Silika, Emma,some of her family settled in Israel some came to Conn.

I have no idea where my great-grandmother Sali KOHN was born but suspect that it was somewhere in what is now eastern Slovakia because that's where my great-grandfather's MOSKOVITS family lived. All I know is that Sali (aka Sara, Czili) was born in 1846 (according to her death record) and died in Michalovce, Czech. in May 1924. Records found in the Uzhgorod archives refer to some males who were probably Sali's father or brothers. There is an Izsak KOHN listed as witness or rabbi to birth of one son in 1865 and Mozes KOHN listed as witness or rabbi to birth of another son in 1881. Does this help? Where is Gava?

Gava is short for Gavavencsello. It is close to the Carpathian mountains. It was the first town settled in Hungary by the Huns when the Romans gave them the land so they would stop fighting...It was over four hours to get there from Budapest !!! That is where my father was born. His last name is Knapp he was a doctor and met my grandmother in the hospital.. she was a nurse there

Gavavencsello is southerly of Sarospatak and northeast of Tokaj. I'm not sure how a young lady from here would have met a young man from Szobrancz, which appears to be about 75 km away. Any thoughts?

My grandmother was born in 1900. She was Kohn as well.
Her mother name's - according to the birth record - Kohn Berta. I do not know else about them, as her parents gave her into orphanage in Budapest.
Could you tell something about them?

KOHN was a very common Hungarian Jewish name. Is there some reason why you believe there is a Szobrancz connection? Birth records for two of my grandmother's siblings in 1866 and 1881 list KOHN Izsak and KOHN Mozes as witnesses.

I just returned from a three week trip to Hungary and Slovakia including visits to Sobrance and Michalovce. According to records in Michalovce, the parents of Sali Kohn were Izak (Benjamin Yitzhak) KOHN and Anna LEFKOVIC. The records did not indicate where Sali was born.

Hi, welcome back from your trip at least you got to see a lot more than we did my fathers family was from budapest. My grandfather was a doctor Julius Knapp, we know nothing about his family at all except my other grandmother met him in the hospital where she worked. My great grandfather was David kohn..together with my grandmother they had 13 children.. One of them Silka married a Lefovits in Budapest he left his wife to marry her.

I found Izak Kohn living in Zebegnyo near Galzecs with wife Anna Lefkovits and children Markus, Mozes, Herman, Lajb, and Czila (possibly incorrect) in 1869 Census. Please contact me if you have Kohn or Lefkovits family from this place.

Sali married Markusz MOSKOVITS and lived in Ostrov and Michalovce. Lipot emigrated to the US in 1912 and settled in Cleveland. Szidonia married Herman STERN from Tarczal and had a son Abraham b. 1884. I'm looking for information on the others.

My great-great-grandfather Izak KOHN was born in Tarnoka (now Trnavka, Slov.) abt 1816. He married Anna LEFKOVICS had they had 9 children born in Zebegnyo (now Zbehnov, Slov.).

Mozes b. 1839, Abraham b. 1841, Julius (Jonas?) b. 1843, Sali (my ggm) b. 1846, Lajb b. 1848, Lipot b. 1855, Markus b. 1857, Armin (Herman) b. 1859, and Szidonia (Czili) b. 1861. There may have also been a son Adolf b. about 1845 who married Johanna (Hani) SCHWARCZ fm Palanka.

Sali married Markusz MOSKOVITS and lived in Ostrov and Michalovce. Lipot emigrated to the US in 1912 and settled in Cleveland. Szidonia married Herman STERN from Tarczal and had at least 7 children including sons Jeno (a doctor in Budapest) and Andor who perished in the Shoah. Julius married Johanna (Hani) FUCHS from Tolcsva.

En keresek t�bb embert a Turini Szaz utan. Azt hallottam, hogy a csaladok tudjak, ki volt benne es arrol volt oknany amit a csaladba tartottak meg es az �r�k�s�k kapjak mindig meg.
