Pal Kokity: Rediscovering my ancestry
Hello, I am a first generation Hungarian living in the USA. My father came over during the revolution and met my Mother. They divorced when I was young. He hasn't been very helpful for helping me rediscover my heritage. I have been trying to research my Hungarian family and have ran into some dead-ends. From what I understand, the Kokity and Kokai families are/were the same family.

My father is Janos Kokity. His Parents were Pal Lajos Kokity(1904-1990?) and Magdolna Anna Nagy(1907?-1990?). Pal's parents were Pal Kokity (1871-1936 may have gone by Kokai) and Katalin Balazs(1874-1957). Pal Senior's parents were Martin Kokity(1840's ) and Julianna Kerekes(1850's ). Most of these relatives appear to have lived in Szabadka/Bacsbodrog area since early 1800's.

I am in the process of relearning the Hungarian language and hope to visit my relatives to find out more about my Kokity (or Kokai), Nagy, Balazs, and Kerekes ancestry. Is there anybody out there that recognizes any of my ancestry?

Thank you, Pal

The LDS-Mormons website is listing a church records of Szabadka, Bacsbodrog megye Subotica, Yugoslavia. You can order the films and gather ancestral information.

Surname KOKAI, BALAZ^, KEREKES^and NAD^ lists in Subotica's phone book.

Erwin: Re: Rediscovering my ancestry
Dear Pál,

I'm not shure of it's helpful but I found a Paul Kokay mentioned 1720 in a consription in Civitas MVaradiensis, Bihar county. (from a book by Vince Bunyitai: A váradi püspökség története; Conscriptio incliti comitatus Bihariensis 1720.

Dezsö Csánki mentions (Csánk Dezsö: Magyarország történelmi földrajza a Hunyadiak korában) a bojai Kókay family in Heves county (year 1489: you could have a look on the document: see the hungarian state archive ; "Dl. 19441")

A nobility recognition is/was in the archive of Esztergom:
KÓKAI. Esztergomi primási lt(=archive). Prot. J. fol, 23

You should try to be very shure about the exact pronounciation of your name: I also found some very close family names like "Kokavay", "Koka", "Kokas", etc.. For any DECISIONS it would be very helpful to know more, e.g. where your ancestors lived earlier...

good luck!
regards, Erwin
