olga: Beregszarz
My name is Markovits by birth and my grandparents were from Beregszarz Bertha and Samuel. My father's name was Marton, his brother Ougen and sister Cecilia, all jews. I have found a photo with the name ch. valalik and when I put it in the computer it came up as Hungarian and this site appeared. Is there anyone out there who can help me trace my jewish ancestry. Names are Markovits, Hoer, Roth and Stern, from the little my father told me. He was born in 1908 or thereabouts.

The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :

The word valalik might be just a word for a village and not actual village. (not sure).

jerry markowich: My grandfather
My grandfather Yakab Markovits was born on 02 Nov 1866 in Nemetboly, Baranya, Hungary. He migrated to the United States and to Milwaukee, Wisconsin about 1905-1910.

He married Katharina Bernhardt and had one son, Jack Markowich.

Yakab served in the Austro-Hungarian Army for for 10 years and three months, and two years in the 19th Hungarian Royal Regiment. Altogether he served 12 years and three months as an infantryman. According to the discharge paper he was not wounded or fought in any particular campaign, although there is reference to a rebellion in 1885.

His discharge paper is dated 31 December 1908. If this paper was issued at the time of his discharge, he would have joined when he was 30 and got out at 42. Military service was mandatory, and it is doubtful that this information is correct. It is likely that his discharge was issued at a later date for some other purpose, possibly immigration.

It was reported that Yakob was a shoemaker for some time in Budapest Hungary.

He worked as a teamster in Milwaukee for a brewery and died one week after being hit on the head with a board during a fight. Apparently nothing was done to his attacker according to his son, Jack Markowich.

I would like to know who his parents were and if he had any brothers or sisters.
