Borbala

Do you have a place of birth for your Borbala and Janos?
Up to 1918 the records would say Austria or Hungary. After the fall of this A-H empire several new countries were formed and one was Czechoslovakia, which in 1993 separted into Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.
The SK's phone book is listing MATTA and C^AC^KO.

Did you find them on Ellis Island website?

mischan: Re: Borbala Matta
Thanks for response to Borbala Matta. Ellis Island 1912 immigration indicates last residence as Lazony, Hungary. 1882 Hungarian Gazetteer identifies that as Zemplen county, Nagy-Mihalyi seat/district and town of Lazony. She arrived in USA single/alone. 1915 Marriage license application lists birthplace Austria. 1935 death certificate lists Czechoslovakia. Official documents list Borbala, family/friends use English equivalent of Barbara. Her father Andy Matta from A-H was deceased as of June 1915. Her mother Anna was alive then living in A-H. No siblings are referenced anywhere. Have located the 1930 U.S. census document listing her household and children. Borbala remarried circa 1928/30. She died Mrs. Andrew Konja in Gary, Indiana in 1935.

Janos Csacsko uses English equivalent of John on all official U.S. documents. No positive identification through Ellis Island yet, hence no last residence information. His father had same name, was a farmer and alive as of June 1915 in A-H. Mother's name unknown but deceased at same time. No siblings are referenced anywhere. Began using Chasko spelling when children were born beginning in 1918. Cannot locate family in 1920 U.S. census documents but continue looking. Apparently did not apply for U.S. citizenship. John died in April 1926 in Gary, Indiana.

All family photos/documents destroyed in residential fire circa 1930.

Zlatica : Re: Csacsko
Mischan

Looking at all the CSACSKOs that came thru Ellis Island, I would say that it is pointing to a village Tusa/Tussa which is Tusice, Slovak Republic.
The surname C^AC^KO does show up in good numbers in this village. (I know that is not the scientific way to do genealogical research). The village of Lozin is South-East of Tusice about 11 km.

The LDS-Mormons website is listing church records of both villages. You can order the films and gather ancestral information.
www.iabsi.com/gen/public very informative website
www.fam.aust.com/topolcsany/names first name translation website
