kag52551: murin, labaj, skycak
I am searching for others with Murin, Labaj, or Skycak relatives in the Namestovo area. My great-grandfather, Wendellin Murin emigrated to the US in early 1900's with my great-grandmother, Mirria Skycak. My other great-grandmother, Ilona Labaj also came at the same time, no knowledge of husband in Namestovo but son named Matej.

Karen

You know me by now, as I have posted to your query on another board.
You can also try posting on www.slovensko.com www.mytarg.net.
Check in www.iarelative.com in the Surname Index. There are about 8 postings for surname MURIN and 1 LABAJ.
You know that Ilona is Magyar / Hungarian for Helen(a).
The church records of Namestovo should provide the name of Ilona's husband.
Do not overlook the spelling LABAY in Ellis Island manifests as some were from Bameszto (Nameszto = Namestovo. There are also LABAIs and one is from Zubrohlava which is not far from Namestovo.

Thanks for the suggestions, Zlatica. A few I have already done, a few I haven't. Appreciate the input and a different view of the same information. Still haven't been to Family History Center to find my grandfather's birth certificate to see if there is a father listed, but I have heard that they have filmed Namestovo and Klin. You were the one who told me that Ilona was Helen and I think also that Matej is Matthew, which my dad knew that his father's name had been before he came to US. I found a seven year old Matej Labaj, in Ellis Island Records, coming to his mother Ilona Labaj and "felt" I had found my grandfather. This explained his disconnectedness from his family and the reason he never "felt a part". There was a new step-father and half brothers and sisters and a mother who maybe was a mother too soon and alone and who resented that child. Genealogy speaks a certain truth through the
words on pages. I feel sorry for that little boy who was my grandfather, a nice man but an alcoholic. Are you a professional genealogist or is it a serious hobby for you?

Zlatica : Re: murin, labaj, skycak
Your welcome, Karen

This has evolved into serious hobby for me. Those were hard times for our ancestors. Some had it worst than others in the "new land".

If you decide that you want to "connect" with the distant relatives in the "old country", send them a letter with family information, your e-mail and a photo of your ancestor for that "extra" visual aid. Best if the letter be in Slovak but it is possible that they know English.
Did you get an e-mail from me about Slovak language from Jednota article? Did you get to go back and read my post on your Kuldanek surname?

Zlatica,
I haven't written letters to old country yet, but have a form letter in Slovak I got from Czech and Slovak Genealogical Society of Illinois. I just started Slovak classes last week and I am so excited! Haven't seen your posting on Kuldaneks yet, but will look.
Dakujem, dovidenia,
Karen
